Pitching an Assassin's Creed Game: Caledonia (Scotland) Wishlist Share 6 Aug 2025 Written By: Edited By: James Davis (TopChef1288) Colum Blackett Back To Database I've always wanted to have an Assassin’s Creed set in Scotland, I feel it would have a great connection to both the Templar vs Assassin story but also the Isu lore potential would be massive. From the day I first watched Highlander with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. I've always been obsessed with Scotland. They have a rich history and a blood one too; that would lend itself well to the Assassin story. Scottish Brotherhood of Assassins by Okiir With characters like William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, James Douglas (the Black Douglas) Edward I and more, Ubisoft could really create a story rooted in a strong historical setting. I believe a Scottish Assassin’s Creed game has been a fan favourite location and setting for so long, more so than the Vikings or even Japan. After some research and some long hours, I've put together a pitch for just that. An Assassin’s Creed game set in Scotland. Set during the time of The First War of Scottish Independence. Set During the years 1290-1307. Modern Day Protagonist: Aila Fraser “You don’t have to be born to it. You just have to choose” Alastair Fraser, the night before the accident to Aila. Art by Serajeddine Background: Age: 29 Place of Birth: Inveraray, Scotland Family: Raised by her grandmother, Mòrag Fraser. Both parents are deceased under suspicious circumstances. Lineage: Distant descendent of Edward Kenway & Desmond Miles, via an unknown Scottish branch of the Kenway line. Her story in the Modern Day: She was raised in the quiet town of Inveraray (Argyll) after a tragic car crash claimed the lives of her parents. She worked as a local historian, fascinated by Celtic ruins, folklore and the untold stories of her country’s history. Aila had always wondered how she survived; the car accident when she was just six years old that took both her parents' lives. But no one had the answers. All that remains is her father’s pendant. Cold metal, never aging and never removed from around her neck. While out in the field conducting some research on an undiscovered Pictish site, her pendant started pulsing. The ground beneath her feet begins to glow with some sort of strange energy. She stumbles back, a little shaken. A few days later, her flat was ransacked. Her research had been wiped. She began to feel like she was being followed. She calls Shaun a family friend, in a panic. He doesn't hesitate and they meet at his house. Once she looked at him, from the look in his eyes. Aila realises something. He knew, all along. Shaun Hastings was sarcastic, brilliant and overly protective. He was a family friend that worked with her parents. He seemed to always be around. Aila felt his guiding influence but was never pushy. She never thought to question it. Shaun finally tells her the truth. Her father, a Templar. Who defected when he found out her mother was an Assassin & pregnant. They tried to leave the war behind them, to raise her free from it all. The pendant her father stole was the final piece to Claidheamh Soluis , a dormant Piece of Eden. The crash wasn't random, it was an execution. Only she survived. Shaun explained that he believed it was because of the pendant. And its hidden power. He was assigned to watch over here and protect her from the Templars. But he stayed for as long as he did because he started to care about Aila. Now she doesn't know who to trust. Not Shaun, the Assassins, not the Templars. But she did need answers. She discovers encrypted messages, hidden within the pendant. They were left by her father and they revealed her ancestry. Aila is descended from an Assassin called Taran MacLeod. He once wielded Claidheamh Soluis . The pendant is more than just a trinket from her father. It's one of four ancient fragments to Claidheamh Soluis and it only responds to her. She's a walking legacy of both orders. Assassin and Templar blood flows through her. She was never meant to be a soldier, she was meant to be the solution. The choice to fight - but on her own terms: After surviving the attack from Templars, and unlocking eagle vision, she learns the truth about her lineage. Aila finally steps into the Animus with the help of Shaun & Rebecca. With their help, Aila tries to navigate what’s locked deep in her DNA. She relives the memories of her ancestor, Taran MacLeod; a highlander Assassin during the First War of Independence. Each session reveals clues, fragments of Taran’s life and his last mission, along with the places he hid the pieces of Claidheamh Soluis before the war consumed him. BUT.. As she uncovers more, she begins to see the bigger picture. The Assassins want the weapon to remain hidden forever. The Templars want to reclaim and repurpose the weapon. Both sides believe they know what's right. But neither have seen its destruction and devastation. Aila chooses to fight, but not for either order, not for ideology. She fights to end the war her parents died in, and to keep others from repeating the same mistakes. Aila will decide what becomes of Claidheamh Soluis . Because it isn't their story anymore. IT’S HERS. Historical Protagonist: Taran MacLeod “They took my father’s life, then his legacy. I’ll take much more from them” Taran to William Wallace, at his initiation ceremony. Art by Serajeddine Background: Age: 26 Place of birth: Isle of Skye Family: Father and brother murdered by the English. Mother died not long after Taran was born. Lineage: Son of a respected Scottish Assassin. He's descended from an ancient line of Highland resistance fighters. Origin Story: Taran grew up on the Isle of Skye, the younger of two sons in a proud Highland family with a secret; his father was a Master Assassin. Guarding the Scottish border from the growing Templar forces in England. He always knew about the Brotherhood, the Hidden Ones, the Creed and why strangers came in the night, with whispers of freedom. But Taran’s father refused to train him. “You lead with your temper, Taran. Your brother leads with his mind. I need heirs not martyrs” These words stuck with Taran. He was left behind, told to master the forge, the bow and the land. While his brother trained in stealth, philosophy and the Creed. Taran hid his resentment behind grit and hid grit behind his pride. One evening, Taran was sent into the hills for a three day hunt. A common practice but it made Taran feel like an exile. When he returned everything changed. The house was burning. The air stank of blood and smoke. His father and brother lay dead in the ashes, stripped of their robes, their bodies desecrated, their weapons gone. Burned deep into the doorway was a Templar cross. The pendant, his father always wore, a keepsake from his mother, was missing. A dying villager nearby, called out to Taran and told him what he already knew. “English knights. Led by a highborn commander. They came in the dark. They didn't ask questions. They knew what and who they were looking for. Your father stood his ground. They butchered them both, and took something from around your father’s neck” The pendant, the last remaining connection to his mother, was now gone. They took his family, they took the legacy he would never be able to earn. Taran did not grieve, instead he decided to hunt. Taran followed the English for days, his eyes burning from the lack of sleep, his limbs becoming heavy. He was close. Taran had seen the pendant glimmer in the moonlight around the commander’s neck. It belonged to Taran and he needed to get it back. He stalked their camp from the ridges, hiding as the heavens opened, watching and planning. But he wasn't alone. Someone else had been tracking the English and Taran. At first, he thought it was nerves. But then Taran started noticing things. Horses became spooked, guards disappearing from patrol. Traps Taran had set up becoming disarmed or moved. And once, by a frozen stream, footprints beside his own. Deliberately left. Taran grew reckless, frustrated and paranoid. When the convoy made camp underneath an old bridge, that's when Taran decided to strike. His ambush was fast, brutal but messy. He missed the killing blow. His blade glanced off his targets armour, they cried out and he was seen. Steel and boots came charging through the snow. He ran, wounded. And the commander escaped again with the pendant. As the world spun and blood stained the white snow beneath him. The last thing Taran saw was a shadow moving through the soldiers like a wraith. Steel sang and men screamed, and Taran’s world went black. Taran awoke beside a fire, aching and the smell of smoke, and damp filled his lungs. His cloak was gone and replaced with another one. This one was heavier and lined with a tartan pattern he didn't recognise. A man sat across from him, sharpening a cured blade by the fire. The man was older and broad-shouldered. His voice broke the silence, it was low and familiar but firm. “You’re lucky you’re not dead. That was a fool’s move” Taran looked at the man, and tried to get the measure of him “You? You were watching me” The man did not dent it, he stood slowly and approached Taran “I thought I was watching a ghost. Until I saw what you was really made of” The stranger tossed something at Taran, a cloth wrapped bundle. Inside a hidden blade, like the one he had seen his father use with his brother. “Who are you?” the man stepped fully into the light of the fire. “William Wallace. Your father trained with me. We were brothers” silence. Taran blinked and the weight of the name hit harder than any blade could. “He never told you about me, that's fine we kept many secrets” Wallace sat beside Taran and continued “I arrived too late to save him. I thought the line was broken, all the MacLeods dead. But then I heard of a mad man hunting English through the glens, setting traps like a hunter but fighting like a wounded wolf” As he stood up, Taran watched, still rooted to the spot “I followed you, watched” Wallace moved towards the cliff edge. Taran noticed an old carved stone, next to Wallace. Just visible through the moss was a faded insignia, like the one on his father’s robes. Gazing out over the glen “You want vengeance, I’ll give you something better” Wallace turned and with a heavy tone “We are Assassins. We work in the dark to serve the light. Nothing is true and everything is permitted” Taran sat up and listened but for the first time, he was really listening “These are our tenets. Break them, and you break the Brotherhood” Wallace was intensely staring at Taran, raised two fingers and pointed “Stay your blade from the flesh of the innocent. Hide in plain sight. Never compromise the Brotherhood” “Your father lived by them. He died for them. What will you do?” Taran was beaten and bruised, staring at the blade in his lap. Then back at Wallace and then fire. “Train me” he asked. That night, beneath the night sky. Taran MacLeod becomes an Assassin. Not through inheritance but by choice. The creed was reborn in him. And the war of Scotland has a new hero. Pieces of Eden: Claidheamh Soluis: (Sword of Light) The Claidheamh Soluis comes from Gaelic mythology, most notably within Irish and Scottish folklore. It appears various times, in historic cycles. Descriptions of it are often: A sword glowing as bright as the sun. Able to blind enemies before a blow was struck. A weapon that must be earned through a great quest or ordeal and even sometimes hidden in a tower of glass, guarded by mythical creatures. A blade that could cut through anything. Often symbolising truth, justice, and divine right. Through Irish in its origin, these myths blended into Scottish oral tradition. Especially in the Highlands where Gaelic culture remained dominant. Claidheamh Soluis survived in fragments of folklore, bardic poetry and later in romanticized accounts of Highland ancestry and warrior kings. Image via Wulflund Why the Templars want it: To the modern day Templar, this sword isn't just a legend. It's a corrupted memory of a real Piece of Eden. the consistency of the lore across Gaelic cultures, the mythical properties, and its association with elite bloodlines all point to a misunderstood relic. They believe the myth of Claidheamh Soluis is based on a real Isu weapon, hidden and remembered imperfectly through generations of oral storytelling. Its connection to kingship and divine right align with Templar philosophy: order through control. The Gaelic idea that it can only be wielded by someone who is worthy, suggests a genetic lock, which in turn would make it the perfect tool. And its destructive potential could be recovered and studied by them. Leading to them harnessing its power; resulting in either battlefield dominance or even in Templar propaganda. In game codex entry: “The Sword of Light, Claidheamh Soluis, was once thought to be just a bard’s tale. Passed on through time. But legends endure for a reason. Buried beneath the poetry of Highland clans and Celtic gods lies a truth. A truth that the Templars can't ignore any longer. A weapon forged by something old and something unexplainable. A myth waiting to be claimed once more” Cridhe Soluis: (Heart of Soluis) There are few artifacts in Scotland’s long and blooded history that appear in legend and myths as often or even as enigmatically as the Heart of Soluis. No sources that survive today can describe its shapes or what it's made from. There have been no confirmed sightings or at least none survive or exist today. But yet, this symbol appears across centuries in stonework, on burial clothes and in whispered tales from kings, seers and warriors alike. Its first mention dates all the way back to the Pictish period, where it was carved into tombs and some sanctified sites. Never in abundance but was always deliberate and sometimes hidden. The symbol has always been associated with death rites and elite burials in some cases; which would suggest reverence rather than a possession. Its never described as a weapon or a relic of command but rather something much older; and appears to be something that chooses rather than is chosen. Its next appears somewhat 463 years later during the reign of Robert the Bruce. Though obscured by time and ecclesiastical redactions, several accounts from Dunfermline Abbey region may suggest a second heart, not like the physical one destined for the Holy Land but a symbol of light. While described in fragmented texts as “a cold light held by stone” it appears in carvings and funeral motifs connected to Robert’s lineage. With many dismissing it as a poetic metaphor, some argue that it reflects a deeper, more mythical truth. That Robert, like the Picts before him, were tied to something ancient and something that remains hidden. Why the Templars need it: The Heart could possibly be a Piece of Eden. Its current form and purpose remain elusive to them. It has appeared in Pict iconography, reappears 463 years later and has resurfaced in sites once believed to be dormant. It can't be a coincidence. Its presence across such distant periods throughout time, where it's always linked to strong bloodlines, conflict and death. Suggests it may not be a passive artifact, but it may not be a weapon in the traditional sense either; maybe something much more specific in its function. The Templars wouldn't pursue it blindly. They pursue it because they can't afford not to. If it is what they suspect it to be, a relic from The Ones Who Came Before . Then it needs to be recovered, studied and secured. That is before the Assassins find it first. The Story: In the mists of Scotland’s often forgotten but bloody past, a war fought not out of freedom but for something far more powerful. Historian Aila Fraser thought she’d found her life’s work when she uncovered an uncharted Pictish site deep in the Highlands. Among the stone relics and burial markers, she noticed a strange symbol. One that was similar to a marking on the pendant passed down from her late parents. Moments later, the ground trembled beneath her feet and suddenly a surge of cold light pulsed from the earth. Days after her discovery, Aila’s flat is ransacked. All her notes, her collected data and samples she had collected over the last few years. All gone. Then a weird feeling starts to set in, she's being followed. In her search for answers, Aila contacted her godfather and former mentor, Shaun Hastings. Who reveals to her a world that she never knew existed. A secret war waged for centuries between Assassins and Templars. Her parents were caught in that war and now so is she. Aila’s next job is to survive and try to understand what this all means for her. Shaun convinces her to enter the animus and to relive the memories of Taran MacLeod. A Highland warrior from the 13th century. After his father and brother are both brutally murdered by English soldiers at the order of Edward I, Taran seeks vengeance. But instead he finds purpose from an unlikely source, William Wallace. An assassin operating under the shadow of a rebellion. With Wallace’s guidance and training, Taran becomes a silent blade in Scotland’s war for independence. He strikes fear into Edward’s forces and sabotages the Templar grip in the north. But Edward seeks more than just territory. He's heard whispers of a weapon buried beneath Scotland’s soil. A mythical artifact said to control minds and command loyalty. The Sword of Light or as legend knows it Claidheamh Soluis. Edward finds the sword. But Edward underestimates Taran and the Assassins. Taran tracks Edward down, and finds him held up in Carlisle Castle. Edward was planning his final attack on Scotland and his plan to eradicate the Scots once and for all. The Keep at Carlisle Castle Edward, now Templar Grand Master, with the Sword of Light by his side. Its influence is already twisting his mind. Taran fights his way through the castle and Edwards most trusted guards. Deep within the stone halls of Carlisle Castle’s Keep, beneath the blood red banners of England, Taran finally faces Edward head on. Edward clad in iron and clutching the Sword of Light. The sword's otherworldly powers cause Edward to not fight like a mere man but something much worse. The castle walls shake with every clash of steel. Wind howling through the arrow ‘and a thunder storm gathers above. They fought their way to the Keep’s rooftop. Both men soaked through. Taran is driven to his knees with a crushing blow. He's beaten and broken, he closes his eyes and something or someone speaks to him. “Now” the voice screamed. In that moment Taran opens his eyes and sees Edward overreaching, believing himself to be untouchable. He strikes, burying his hidden blade into Edward’s chest. The tyrant king lets the sword slip out of his hand and clatters to the floor. Taran seized it and watched as Edward’s final breath left him. Stood over Edward, Taran knows what the sword could do in the wrong hands. And like that Taran vanished and with him the sword. Now in the present day, Aila finds herself outside Dunfermline Abbey; the final resting place of Scotland's great king Robert the Bruce. She’s made sure no one, Templar or Assassin can access the tomb again. It was there she finally saw the truth. Her pendant, her only keepsake of her parents. Was in fact the Heart of Soluis. The same heart that Robert asked James Douglas to return back to the holy land after his death. Her pendant was worn by kings, warriors and Pictish high priests. Her pendant was more than a keepsake. It is the key. A fragment to find the sword. It's the last piece of the mystery that will reveal where Taran hid the sword. Now Aila is the only one, with the help of Shaun and Rebecca. - Marc-Alexis Côté and Assassin’s Creed’s narrative paradigm shift | TheOnesWhoCameBefore
Marc-Alexis Côté and Assassin’s Creed’s narrative paradigm shift Analysis Share 3 Dec 2024 Written By: Edited By: UbiCypher (Joe) Colum Blackett Back To Database The Vice President Executive Producer of Assassin's Creed, Marc-Alexis Côté, has stepped out into the spotlight on the BAFTA Youtube channel at an event a few days ago giving off a curated speech commenting on Ubisoft's flaws and the intended direction the franchise will follow for the foreseeable future upon the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows serving as the inflexion point for such a change in the narrative direction. Describing his trajectory as a rookie game developer all the way to his actual status as Executive Producer for the overall franchise, he presented the audience with a complete breakdown of the core values of “What Assassin’s Creed should be” in other words, he transparently commented on the way they develop each iteration via their “Brand Framework” which is basically a codex under the form of internal documents given to the devs from which they need to base their work and efforts for the continuity of the Lore. Breaking the Framework into the following aspects; Identity: Immersion, storytelling and thrilling gameplay. Intentionality: Every creative decision made by the devs ought to reflect the shared vision and values of the Framework to ensure that the identity is not diluted and continuity is strong footed. Official promo image by BAFTA showing Vice President Executive Producer of Assassin's Creed, Marc-Alexis Côté, Prioritizing direct and selected feedback over the community as a means to an end. “Putting the player at the center of our creative vision” is also one of the substantial statements issued by Côté which clearly shows that they are aware of their position with the fanbase that nurtured the franchise for so long and are willing to turn the tables in their favor bringing new experiences in the good old Assassin’s Creed fashion applying the aforementioned “core values” described in their “Brand Framework”. These “core values” will not only restructure their approach to how an Assassin’s Creed game is made, but from now on, they will also implement new data collected by their new initiative that aims to “involve their most engaged fans into the early development cycles” with the intention to listen to a much more direct feedback instead of “actively listening to general community feedback and running large scale studies” which is yet another example of Ubisoft going all in and taking the helm, considering the hard working fan communities and content creators that adhere to what the franchise was originally praised for in the past first and the public that spawned with the latest iterations second. A slide from the BAFTA presentation Or so it seems, given another pungent declaration in which Ubisoft now seems eager to “restore the balance” in terms of narrative both past and present as he acknowledged that “15 years of Lore has made the approach to newcomers difficult to approach”, however, the downside to such a bold move can lead to even more division, to which we can all agree; the fanbase is in a very dire situation. But fear not! Because this means that a great change in how the future instalments will be crafted will come out of this, presenting the “Vertigo Of History” initiative as a new way to develop the Assassin’s Creed games by focusing on the idea that “Past, Present and future are connected” therefore, how the past defines who we are and how it will affect our future. Emotional wording aside, this will basically mean that the way Modern Day and the Historical storyline will be designed will be completely overhauled; by pretending to “place history back at the center of the player’s experience”, which is a bit contradictory to what you just read, I know, but the trade-off is that when Modern Day will be tapped into, they will explore “deeper themes regarding genetic memory, identity and autonomy” which is until now, left to the interpretation of the public and not very clear. In any case, Modern Day will be explored deeper so that’s a good step toward restoring that “balance” if true. Original image source: Assassin's Creed Initiates Balance, accuracy and diversity victims of hate. With this in mind, it is important to note that Côté also openly stated that “Absolute accuracy is not our goal, it has never been and never will” of course referring to the historical aspect of the game the franchise is notoriously known for, for the first time clarifying their intentions when making their games reminding us that it is a “Historical Fiction” at the end of the day in response to the previous months of continuous attacks via their Social Media and even directly to the developers themselves who saw their work tarnished by mentally draining and smile-erasing comments completely destroying their work due to the appearance of anachronistic or plain out non-existent elements in the latest RPG trilogy and most recently, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows which, dare I say, has suffered from one of the most hateful waves of backlash the internet has seen in the past 4 years for very miserable reasons; from fruits appearing in the wrong season in one of the trailers to plain out racism towards Yasuke because of his African provenance hiding behind pathetic ill-crafted shields of “It’s not me who says it, it’s history!”. Of course, we are not going to deny the fact that they made some inexplicable mistakes that are obviously due to a lack of professional consultation by actual Historians and experts -which were brought in much later into Shadow’s dev cycle according to insiders who have reached out to the renowned leaker and French Youtuber j0nathan- or the scandal over the insensitive design of PureArts promotional figures which displayed the two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke posing over an iconic Japanese Torii gate, which, was one-legged and very reminiscent of the S annō Shrine, a real life Torii Gate which was left partially destroyed by the bombing of its hosting city, Nagasaki during WWII. In any case, online crusades and Scandals behind, around the 36:00 mark, Marc-Alexis Côté concluded his speech on the attacks to the company by claiming that “Our commitment to inclusivity is grounded in historical authenticity and respect for diverse perspectives, not driven by modern agenda” Image by TOWCB showing the similarity between the AC Shadows prototype by PureArts prototype and a broken Torii gate located in Nagasaki From now on until February 15, 2025, it is but a waiting game to see if all of this turns out to be true or if it falls down to the pile of broken promises. Personal Commentary: Listening very carefully to what Côté openly said during the conference; I realized just how grand this franchise is and how far it has come. I remember the very first time I played Assassin's Creed II -my entry point- back in 2011 and the insta-love that struck my prepubescent brain. These feelings of discovery, wonder and diversity that are constantly talked about throughout the presentation are real, they were there when we first picked up the controller and began exploring the Genetic Memories of Altaïr and Ezio, as the years passed, we eventually discover more and more of this franchise and eventually witness its fall down the rabbit hole of corporate greed and uber-rich execs that would do anything in their power to drain you until your last cent. So it feels refreshing to see such transparency from Ubisoft and from the one that is supposed to be the closest thing to a lore master no-less. All in all, these are just promises and embellished corporate slang to make it more appealing, plus he contradicted himself by claiming that they aim to restore the balance only to say that they will basically put Modern Day on the backburner 5 minutes later... My best guess is that they're attempting to suffocate the fire and make up for their mistakes now that they realized we never were the "Ye Olde Nostalgicus" pricks most of the community and newcomers to that extent make us to be, simply because we don't follow the same opinions, ideas and tastes as them, who are fruit of a modern generation of gaming that, similarly to movies and music is utterly decadent with no more interest behind what is shown at first glance and no self-pondering of things with very few exceptions. This also applies outside of entertainment as well, the masses are somewhat dullified by mainstream and geopolitical engineering crafted by our governments who only want to see us fight each other for the skin tone of a character or goddamned fruits popping up at the wrong season all the while entitled nobodies destroy entire communities and groups of joyful people who just want to love, share and enjoy the experiences this franchise gave them in the first place. But I digress. I'm not very hopeful in terms of Modern Day and it is at this point, for me, the true narrative of the franchise, take it or leave it, up to you of course, but it was once integral and as Côté said and I also think it to be true: "Assassin's Creed is more than just a game, it can be a platform for meaningful exploration and reflection". This Week in Assassin’s Creed Virtual Photography: 24th to 30th April Community Share 2 May 2023 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Colum Blackett Back To Database Welcome to the weekly virtual photography roundup hosted by Aaron Young from The AC Partnership Program. Every week I will be picking our top 5 favourite Assassin’s Creed shots and showcasing them on The Ones Who Came Before website, in order to promote virtual photography and talented content creators within the community. Aaron is a keen virtual photographer and loves to post his journeys through Assassin’s Creed on Twitter. Keep an eye on the site as more weekly shots are added, we are looking for captures across all Assassin’s Creed games. Tag your photos to the #TOWCBWeeklyCapture for a chance to be featured. This week’s theme: Assassin’s Creed Sunset Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ MystixVP A beautiful sunset to kick-start this week’s showcase. With the summer fast approaching this capture reminds me of nice walks along the beach. The use of colour in this shot is perfection, I would never expect so many tones of orange to look quite this good. I admire the shadows from the trees as they provide a real depth to the shot. A very warming photo that makes you want to jump back into Origins. Reflection Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ tn_taurus These were some of my favourite moments in Assassin’s Creed Origins, where you can allow Bayek to sit and reflect on his mission. What I love about this shot is the scale, as Bayek has such a great view over the landscape. The colours in this capture are just so delightful. Similar to the Stone Circles that allow Bayek time to remember Khemu, this shot makes me think of his speech about Egypt forgetting who she is. Link to set: https://t.co/fCR6dh0qW8 The Lion King Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ Its_Gurly Photo number three is part of an Assassin’s Creed Origins wildlife set that shows just how great the eco system is within these games. I picked this particular shot as it was giving off massive Lion King vibes. I respect the layout of the capture especially with the blurred effect. These Lions are not to be messed with as the ferocious look suggests. Lucky for us we were able to tame these beasts to work alongside us. Link to set: Cave of Wonders Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ Cyb3r3ll4 This week’s #Thorsday shot sees Eivor exiting a cave after another successful loot no doubt. This capture is glorious, and fits both the minimalist and silhouette categories to perfection. You cannot help but feel like you’re in the cave. I am certainly getting Northman vibes from this shot. Eivor definitely looks ready to journey on knowing his future is fated and won’t change. Vista Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ UkkoVP We end this week’s showcase with a beautiful shot of Sýnin surveying the lands. This capture actually reminds me of a real life destination quite close to where I live. The blue from the sky and the sea is brilliantly saturated, whilst the greenery shines through as a perfect contrast. My favourite part though has to be that shadow creeping across the land. Such an atmospheric shot, I love it. The Ones Who Came Before Photo of the Week: Judge: Michael Smith from TOWCB Core Team The vibrancy of the English countryside is one of the best aspects of AC Valhalla. The beauty found in the isolation of nature, seeing how the country is an island separated from the rest of the world is part of what fueled Eivor to want to explore more and myself as a player to explore the map for vistas like this. And that sums it up for this week’s Assassin’s Creed virtual photography recap list! Thank you for checking out this week’s photo collection. Veteran Assassin's Creed Writer Darby McDevitt announces surprise return to Ubisoft News Share 13 Nov 2021 Written By: Edited By: Colum Blackett (Col_96) Ashlea Blackett Back To Database In a surprise tweet that took Twitter by storm, fan favourite Assassin's Creed script writer Darby McDevitt has announced his return to Ubisoft after an eight month long hiatus. "Yes, I have returned to Ubisoft! As I pondered my career over the past year, I focused on my desire to explore new ideas and unknown frontiers. Much to my delight, this is reflected in my return to Ubisoft to work on AC. I’m excited to continue my journey. Stay tuned!” Back in March 202, McDevitt announced his departure from the company on Twitter, in search of new adventures and opportunities. In a final Tweet, he thanked all of the fans & content creators that have supported & expanded on his work over the years. The news was met with disbelief, as one of the longest serving and most loved developers working on the franchise would no longer be at the helm. Over a 12 year+ period, he has worked on many games and projects, including Revelations, Black Flag, Embers and Bloodlines. Most recently serving as the Narrative Director on Assassin's Creed Valhalla, McDevitt made it his mission to tie up loose narrative threads. His efforts were recognised, as the game featured many callbacks and clever links to previous games, alongside helping to restore the franchise's fading identity. The news was met with online applause, as fans of the franchise revelled in the knowledge that a true loremaster and mentor had returned. Going forward, it is hoped that McDevitt and the narrative teams at Ubisoft can shape new experiences to honour the legacy of the franchise, and restore the elements that feel so distant in recent games. Within the community, Darby is known for his intriguing and sometimes cryptic tweets, making fans dig beneath the surface to discover the truth. He represents the best that the Assassin's Creed series can be, and we here at TOWCB are thrilled by the news, especially as the upcoming 'Assassin's Creed Infinity' project brings with it such uncertainty, as the series moves towards a live service. Little is known about the upcoming project, but Ubisoft recently made it clear that the project is being led by a new cross-studio, collaborative structure, directed by Marc-Alexis Côté, who will serve as executive producer of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Also joining the project is Étienne Allonier, brand director for Assassin’s Creed for the last 10 years, who together with senior producer Julien Laferrière, Creative Directors Jonathan Dumont and Clint Hocking, will change the way the Assassin's Creed series evolves. In the past, studios have passed the baton on to the next, allowing a time window for them to begin work on the next. With the new structure, One group within Ubisoft, made up of multiple teams, will work on Assassin's Creed coherently. With Darby McDevitt back, it's a sigh of relief for many fans to see that the narrative is once again being cared for by safe hands. Stay tuned for further updates. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment. Weekly Assassin's Creed News Recap: 17th - 23rd July 2022: News Share 25 Jul 2022 Written By: Edited By: Colum Blackett (Col_96) Ashlea Blackett Back To Database Welcome to a new weekly Assassin's Creed News Recap series, hosted by Colum Blackett (Col_96) from The Ubisoft Star Players Program (Formerly Mentors Guild). Every week, we will be rounding up Assassin's Creed News and sharing it here on The Ones Who Came Before website. Keep an eye on the site every Sunday for more weekly recaps, or check out our social media links down below to stay updated on everything Assassin's Creed. In another week full of rumours regarding the future of Assassin's Creed, we decided to look past the sea of leaked information and focus on what really matters: The community 1) We begin this week's Assassin's Creed recap with a collaborative project. Community members Arshak ( AC: Landmarks ), Louise Chase (TheNerdyArcher), Zark ( Master Hekate's Ceremonials ), James ( Let's Talk Assassin's Creed ) & Science_creed all came together to host a 2-hour long virtual tour of London whilst playing Assassin's Creed Syndicate! Viewers were also acquainted with facts about Victorian London, as the hosts turned their extensive research into a fun trivia experience. We love to see collaborative community projects, and this one does a great job at cementing the importance of non-combat game modes like Discovery Tour. We hope to see more streams like this in the future, which compliment the Discovery Tour platform by providing fans across the world with bite-sized chunks of history. 2) We here at TOWCB kicked off the week with an exclusive merchandise review, written by Michael Smith from the Writing Team. Check out our review of the new Assassin's Creed Character Blind Box figures by AC Toys, who kindly sent over a review package. Article: A Look at ACToys’ Assassin's Creed Character Blind Box 3) This week our Virtual Photography Twitter Community passed 200 followers! If you're a photo-mode enthusiast, or simply an admirer of Assassin's Creed screenshots, join the community for a chance to be featured in our weekly ' This Week in Assassin's Creed Virtual Photography ' articles! Assassin's Creed VP Captures Community 4) We released the first article in a two-part series dedicated to The Mentors Guild, an Assassin's Creed community program which was sadly closed down in June. In our article, we reflected on the fondest moments and accomplishments of members, and looked back with fondness at a program which opened the doors to hundreds of community members around the world. Article: Mentor Memories: Remembering the Mentors Guild (Part 1) 5) Former lead Ubisoft game designer Stanislav Costiuc tweeted this week announcing a series of farewell sessions to say goodbye to the Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Revelations and AC III Multiplayer modes which are sadly getting shut down. We here at TOWCB hope to see the multiplayer game modes reinstated one day, perhaps with the launch of the mysterious Assassin's Creed Infinity, which was announced back in 2021. The dates for the Multiplayer send-off sessions are: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood – July 23 and 24, July 29 and July 30 Assassin’s Creed: Revelations – August 5 and 6, August 12 and 13 Assassin’s Creed 3 – August 19 and 20, August 26 and 27 Reddit 6) Another project we launched this week was an unboxing video of the upcoming TITAN Evo 2022 AC Edition Gaming Chair, kindly sent to TOWCB Headquarters by Secretlab! A hidden blade was used to open the box, and we had a ton of fun filming the video, so we hope you enjoy! Article: Unboxing TITAN Evo 2022 Assassin's Creed Edition Gaming Chair by Secretlab 7) To celebrate AC Unity Week, Chris Tilton, who worked alongside Ryan Amon and Sarah Schachner on the exceptional Assassin's Creed Unity soundtrack released a sketch of when he was writing the main theme! This behind the scenes image will no doubt be appreciated by music lovers, and is a time capsule dating back to when the main theme was just an idea written on paper! It's a fun little Easter Egg for fans and the sort of content we love to see to mark the 15th Anniversary. You can follow Chris Tilton on Twitter 8) Finally, we conclude this week's news recap by highlighting our weekly Assassin's Creed virtual photography article by Aaron Young , this time featuring shots by: @calisarah1998 @Amaya_Nocturna @MoonsDonuts @punkncreed @Subject_72 You can find the article here: This Week in Assassin's Creed Virtual Photography: 16th - 22nd July 2022 We hope that you enjoyed this Assassin's Creed News Recap! - Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Greek Glory | TheOnesWhoCameBefore
Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Greek Glory Breakdown Share 24 Jun 2025 Written By: Edited By: Hayden Bird Colum Blackett Back To Database When Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launched worldwide in October of 2018, many fans and gamers alike were eager to see how the developers at Ubisoft would take the franchise next after a major series reboot began with the previous game, Origins. 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins was a major success for Ubisoft and served as a solid and necessary rethinking of the overall franchise. The series was in dire need of something new after the financial disappointment of 2015’s Assassin’s Creed Syndicate which was a direct fan response after many gamers starting feeling that the series itself had run its course after a near decade of its existence, and was badly needing fresh and new life into it. Ubisoft followed the path of a full reboot and after the positive reception from both critics and fans of Assassin’s Creed Origins , Ubisoft had serious momentum heading into 2018. Promo image for Assassin's Creed Odyssey showing Alexios Before the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey , fans were not even expecting a new game in the series that year as Ubisoft pointed out the need to pause their old strategy of annual installments, as they released a new Assassin’s Creed game every year since 2008 at the time. The series took a full year off before Origins released, and many fans expected much of the same, a quiet 2018 with a potential release the year after. Ubisoft surprised fans at E3 2018 by announcing Odyssey . Fans were very excited to finally be able to explore the heavily requested historical location of Ancient Greece. Odyssey was set to build upon everything that was great and loved with Origins . The fan feedback was positive of the reboot with new RPG style gameplay elements and more advanced character customization than previous games experienced. Ubisoft set themselves up in a good position to deliver with Odyssey and clearly understood they simply had to expand on what everyone enjoyed with its predecessor rather than changing up the format too much again. Ubisoft was in prime position to capitalize on their own success, and they did just that. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was also a significant first in the series. The ability to choose a character to play as. Ubisoft tried this idea in 2015 with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate by allowing players to switch between a male and female character, but this was the first time you could play as your chosen protagonist for the entire game. Odyssey also allowed gamers to play as a female protagonist for the very first time. The character, named Kassandra, was the fan favorite amongst the pair, while the second playable character was a male named Alexios. The story of the game made it so you choose your own character, but the character you do not select still plays a significant part in the game itself, that way no character is being forgotten. Players also loved the option to choose your own dialogue responses in game. It took the RPG side of the game to a whole new level, as the game before, Origins , did not have an option to select a variety of dialogue choices and featured a single male protagonist, whereas Odyssey switched things up and gave players their own freedom to choose a character of their liking. So, Seeing these big changes for the first time really excited fans all around the world. Promo image for Assassin's Creed Odyssey (2018) showing the Cult of Cosmos Assassin’s Creed Odyssey also took different parts of their game and made them bigger and better than before. The game's map was larger than that of any prior game in the Assassin’s Creed series, by quite a lot as well. The map was measured to its full length at 250 square kilometers. A good example of how big this map really was is that if, in game, you made your way through the map from end to end, it would take you two full hours to make it across. The map was unique and was full of famous Greek islands and the many spots of ocean which is known as the Mediterranean Sea in Greece. In the game, the player could earn and acquire a ship to sail across the many plots of the ocean spread out across the map, making traversing the playable area a lot faster and smoother. The fan feedback of this large map was mostly positive, as some loved having such a massive area of land and sea to explore, while others argued the time spent travelling across the map to your different quest objectives got exhausting and they’d rather be able to quickly maneuver the map. But overall, the idea and reality of such a large playable area was appreciated by the fans. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey had many great parts to not only its story, but gameplay as well, but one area of the games fans enjoyed a lot was the DLC, short for downloadable content, that was released and added onto the games story ending. The DLC story arcs were split into chapters where one chapter would be released at a time and fans would have to wait to continue their adventure until the time the next chapter released. The story DLCs were very admired by fans who spent the extra money on the game's season pass in order to get access to these missions. The DLC features two main storylines that were each split up into three chapters. The DLCs were called ‘Legacy of the First Blade’ which told the story of how the famous and iconic signature weapon used by the Assassins in the series that was known as the hidden blade, came to be in the world. The second DLC was called ‘The Fate of Atlantis’ which focused around the fabled underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Both of these expansions were well received and offered the players additional hours of new gameplay after the completion of the main story. Promo image for 'Legacy of the First Blade' The season pass of the game also offered an incentive for fans to spend the extra money on it as it offered a remaster of the 2012 game Assassin’s Creed III along with the standalone expansion, Liberation . The remaster and expansion were later offered as a separate purchase outside the season pass, but it goes to show how much content Ubisoft packed into these DLCs. Two major story expansions along with a remaster of a fan-favorite game in the series. It was a serious payoff for fans who spent the extra money to get access to these great additions to the game. Ubisoft put all their effort into not only the game, but the future of it and player experience post-launch. It is safe to say that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was a very strong follow-up to a massively successful series reboot. Ubisoft took the correct path by building off the momentum they created a year before, but to still add new things and different changes that were fresh to gamers and made it a worthy journey into Ancient Greece. Ubisoft played their cards right in trying to continue to satisfy longtime fans, but to also introduce new players who could’ve been unfamiliar with the series, and Odyssey was their first experience in the franchise. It catered to all fans both new and returning. Odyssey will certainly be remembered for a long time, as it set the bar high for similar games and the Assassin’s Creed series as a whole. It managed to please fans who were looking to enjoy more of what its predecessor offered, but also include unique elements that made it feel like a true and full mainline Assassin’s Creed game that it certainly was. Assassin’s Creed Virtual Photography: 3rd to 14th June Community Share 25 Jun 2024 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Colum Blackett Back To Database Welcome to the biweekly virtual photography roundup hosted by Aaron Young from the AC Partnership Program. Every two weeks we will be picking our top 5 favourite Assassin’s Creed shots and showcasing them on The Ones Who Came Before website, in order to promote virtual photography and talented content creators within the community. This theme has been run by the TOWCB VP team. We have been monitoring the hashtag and the community hub to see all your wonderful shots. Keep an eye on the site as more shots are added, we are looking for captures across all Assassin’s Creed games. Tag your photos to #ACFirstCivVP for a chance to be featured. Theme: Assassin’s Creed Traveller Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ Tigas_VP The Ones Who Came Before Photo of the Week Judge: @ CapturesByRenzo Renzo Since the very moment I saw this capture by Tigas, I knew it had to be featured in our article. Taking vertical shots can be quite tricky in Assassin’s Creed Origins. However, the artist did an amazing job with this picture. The composition is great, with Bayek’s gaze focused on the horizon and his camel looking back, right into the “camera”. The use of depth of field is very well executed, and the colour palette is so soft and beautiful. This is a fantastic capture, and without a doubt, it deserves to be our shot of the week. Congratulations, Tigas! Aaron “It is not peace that I seek. It is not for my soul that I walk this path”. 2017 seems a long time ago now but viewing virtual photography from Assassin’s Creed Origins is still an absolute delight. The colour palette and the character designs are so good. @ Tigas_VP is one of my favourite Origins photographers. This capture is part of an impressive set that harks back to the wonders of ancient Egypt. The depth of field is impressive as it splits the shot into two, combining the sandy mountain with the calming blue sky. You can’t ignore how good the camel looks with its head almost posing for the camera. I am loving how Bayek’s outfit blends with the colour tones of this striking capture. Viewpoint Game: Assassin’s Creed Mirage VP Artist: @ JChoukroun “How could I regret the only life I’ve ever known”. Viewpoints are something very special to the Assassin’s Creed series. These structures or high points in the landscape allow us to survey the surrounding environment. We now know that they will be of great importance when Assassin’s Creed Shadows releases with the absence of a bird companion. This capture by jchouk is reminiscence of the title screen from Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Basim's pose is very elegant and having Enkidu’s shadow cast across the building is so cool. Once again, the colour palette is on point with those sandy tones complementing the blues. This style shot has almost become iconic from Mirage and jchouk has expertly taken full advantage of the viewpoint. Wolf-Kissed Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ SuzuhaBlack “I am trying to make you see you’re on the wrong path”. Eivor has and will always have a special place in my heart. The Wolf-Kissed one from Norway is a fierce fighter and honourable warrior. Her escapades in England showed that the line between good and evil is a fine one. Here Nick has managed to produce one of my favourite portraits of Eivor. She looks so graceful, yet powerful. Her Celtic hair combined with the face tattoo elevate the shot to new levels. I love how the wolf scar is so prominent on her neck, harking back to her troubled past. I think the standout for me though is the tilt on the portrait, it adds a new and often unseen style to this capture that exudes elegance. Kingdoms Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ cop_filip “A country is its history, the sum of all its stories” Eivor’s time in England is fraught with conflict. The Kingdoms are struggling to survive, and the mix of cultures has become a power struggle. This all plays out in one final battle with the King of Wessex. The real history here fascinates me, and it was so enjoyable for it to feature in an Assassin’s Creed game. Despite the chaos I just described, Filip once again has managed to find peace and beauty with his Valhalla photography. This shot is simply gorgeous, I just love the composition and the way all the colours are in harmony. The Roman walls are meant to keep out the Vikings, but Eivor knows a trick or two on how to blend in. Alexios Game: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey VP Artist: @ Lucascosta797 “I really need to charge more for slaying mythical creatures”. The siblings of Sparta are separated during childhood due to the traumatic events at Mount Taygetos. Both children are descendants of Leonidas who himself was linked to the Isu or First Civilization. Here Lucas has almost bridged that gap between realism and science fiction with his intense portrait of Alexios. The mood in this capture is tremendous, I can’t get enough of the reflective light, especially on the ground where it is mega impressive. I adore how the armour set and the Isu markings combine to fulfil that connection of two worlds. I don’t think he could look anymore badass if he tried. Fantastic capture Lucas. And that sums it up for this Assassin’s Creed virtual photography recap list! Thank you for checking out the photo collection. This would not be possible without the virtual photographers out there so a huge thanks to them. Until next time keep those shots coming in! comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment. - Assassin's Creed Origins: Starter Guide | TheOnesWhoCameBefore
Assassin's Creed Origins: Starter Guide Guides Share 15 Feb 2021 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Ashlea Blackett Back To Database Assassin’s Creed Origins is the first entry in the series to fully embrace RPG elements. Origins lays the foundations for both Odyssey and Valhalla, whilst acting as a prequel to Altair’s crusade. Origins alters the formula for the series as it ushers in a new player base, whilst trying to retain the magic of the original games. Origins is a visually magnificent game that will leave you in awe of both its beauty and size. Spanning across the whole of Egypt, you will embark on a journey of revenge to right the wrongs inflicted upon your family. You begin with one of my favourite cinematics in the series. The game will then throw you straight into the action. Origins is not a slow burner, and you will be fully involved from the start. This can lead to a steep learning curve, but one you will soon master. In this guide I will try to give you the best possible start to your Egyptian adventure. Bayek of Siwa Bayek is the protagonist of this story, an Egyptian Medjay, and the first location for you to explore is Siwa. This city is the home of Bayek and his wife Aya, and acts as the introduction to the game. There is much to do in this part of the map and I would recommend exploring it all. The main quests will act as the foundations of what is to come, however the side quests and extra locations will teach you the basics of what to expect throughout the game. Levelling System Origins introduces a levelling system that will define what you can do in the game. You will earn XP for completing activities within the world. By earning XP you will be able to level up and slowly become more powerful. Even in Siwa there will be areas that are initially too dangerous for you, which indicated by red skull icons above enemies. In some cases, it is possible to defeat them or just sneak past, but I highly recommend either matching their level or going just above. To do so you will want to find a balance between story, side quests and undiscovered locations. The main story will provide you with the most XP, however this will not be enough on its own. The game can restrict your progression if you do not deviate from the main story. This isn’t a bad thing as the map is full of interesting things to discover. If you open the map and check each area of Egypt, you will notice that it has been assigned a power level, and visiting there early can be a frustrating task. My advice would be to follow the organic path set out by the game. Ability Points and Playstyles Every time you level up you will be rewarded with an ability point. This can be added to your ability tree in order to gain new skills. It is a relatively common practice in games now, but at the time it took a bit of getting used to. Your ability tree is split into three playstyles. You can choose to master one, or split your abilities to allow for a more balanced experience. Either way, by the time you reach the conclusion of the game, the chances are that you will have all the skills. The three styles are: Hunter: Focuses on ranged abilities Warrior: The emphasis here is on melee Seer: This is for gadgets/perks that lend themselves to an Assassin’s playstyle Weapons and Combat AC Origins has a lot to offer in this department. There is a real magnitude of weapons available to choose from, and each weapon has a rarity ranking. Blue: Regular Purple: Rare Yellow: Legendary The rarer the item, the more you get from it. You can choose to sell these items for Drachma (money) or dismantle them for resources. I would recommend keeping your favourites from each category, and then dismantling any unwanted regular weapons and selling the rare ones. It is good to know that the rarity often links to stats such as critical hit bonuses. Always compare your gear to see which one offers you the best stats for your playstyle. Keep an eye out for attributes assigned to your weapons. Blacks are standard attributes, but gold will provide you with a nice little boost. The red ones (cursed) are the most interesting as they provide you with high damage but at the cost of reducing your health. Don’t worry if you find a weapon that you like but feel that it is too low a level. A trip to one of the many blacksmiths will provide you with the opportunity to boost it up to your current level in exchange for some Drachma. Combat is a lot more difficult in comparison to the blocking and countering of the old games. Now you can go all-out attack if you wish. Be warned though, that you cannot just button bash, and there is still the need to defend and this is where the shields comes in. Bayek’s shield will be your saviour when surrounded. Use it to parry incoming attacks, but also utilise it as cover from enemy archers. Senu and Loot Senu is your eagle and companion as you travel across Egypt. You will not start with Senu but if you follow the main quest you will soon be reunited with your companion. Senu is easily accessible by pressing up on the D-Pad (console). From here you will be able to fly Senu around the map, with the option to scout areas in advance. Use Senu to discover and tag enemies, loot, resources and objectives, however if you over use this function the game can become less challenging. Sync points will give you a stunning view of the surrounding area, but most importantly increase Senu’s perception. In turn, this links to the loot hidden around the map. You will find a lot of chests hidden underwater and the better Senu’s perception, the more likely you are to find them. Just be aware of crocodiles and hippos, as fighting them off in the water can be challenging. The loot in Origins is critical to so many aspects of the game. Just grab as much as you can, and sell or dismantle it to fill your pockets with Drachma or crafting materials. Crafting Crafting in Origins is all about 6 pieces of gear that you secure very early in the game. From this point on you will need to collect resources to upgrade them. When highlighting the gear you will be shown which resources you need to collect. Hidden Blade: Who does not like this, the staple for any assassin? You will get this once you arrive in Alexandria. You have 10 upgrade levels, each adding to the damage the blade can do. Essential for anyone wishing to play the way of the assassin. Quiver: You will only need to upgrade this 5 times, allowing you to carry additional arrows. A big favourite of mine as the introduction of the bow really mixes up the gameplay. Stabilizer Glove: This compliments the quiver, providing you with increased damage with the bow. Just like the Hidden Blade you will need to level the glove 10 times. Bracer: These can be upgraded 10 times for additional melee damage. Breastplate: Upgrade this to further increase your maximum health, there are 10 levels. Tool Pouch: Only 5 upgrades for this one, and one I did not bother with in the early game. If you follow the Seer abilities focus on this gear piece. Outfits and Mounts If you are playing Origins after Valhalla or Odyssey then you may slightly be disappointed with the customisation options. There are many outfits in the game but they do not have interchangeable parts. Bayek’s clothing does come with the same rarity as his weapons but unfortunately they are purely for cosmetic purposes. The same can be said for the mounts, although you can switch out your horse for a camel if you wish. Do not be put off by this though as there are some very nice outfits in the game. Assassin’s Creed Virtual Photography: 2nd to 13th December Community Share 9 Jan 2025 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Renzo Back To Database Welcome to the biweekly virtual photography roundup hosted by Aaron Young from the AC Partnership Program. Theme: Holiday Sub-Zero Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ FrameHoldPhotos The Ones Who Came Before Photo of the Week Judge: @ Falconswift87 There has never been a better time to fire up Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and take a trip to the North. The winter season is upon us and Eivor is well equipped to deal with the icy winds. This capture from Frame Hold is quite exquisite. The composition elevates the photo, drawing your eye to the snowy tundra. Furthermore, I love how Eivor is framed by the branches as she strolls through the forest. There is definitely a wow factor to the snow and how it looks and feels in the game, you can see this in the trail Eivor leaves in the snow. I adore the choice of outfit too and it fits with the chilly feel of this perfect winter capture. Winter Wonderland Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ UVioletra The world of Assassin’s Creed is rife with opportunity for breath-taking landscape virtual photography. When it comes to winter shots Valhalla is your game. Bianca excels in this department too, with her wonderful talent for capturing stunning vistas. There is so much beauty in this photo, thanks to the excellent composition. The rays from the sun add a touch of warmth to an otherwise wintery feel. The river snaking through the land is captivating, as is the beautiful snow-covered hills. Overall, it’s the colours that draw me in, with that purply/blue hue adding a magical feel to the photo. Snow Capped Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ vgshutter For me Norway is a visual masterpiece in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The sheer scale of the mountains and the crisp white of the snow really transports you back to the Viking days. This photo pays homage to the wonderful game design and reinforces why we love to explore regions in Assassin’s Creed. When I look at this shot it reminds me of the art cards you often get with collector’s editions. I think the white boarder helps to elevate that feel. The sun creeping out behind the tip of the mountain is clever and the Raven gliding towards it is a nice touch. What I love is the fortress/settlement below, those log buildings are giving off real wintery vibes. Daybreak Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ TheAncientGame4 I am not surprised to see Norway featured predominantly for this theme. Once again, I find myself reminiscing back to the launch in 2020 and the absolute joy of entering the world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. What we have here is a panorama of great scale, showcased through the excellent composition and the smart use of light. The line of golden sun piercing the cold water is magnificent and the way its glow reflects off the snow adds a sense of warmth to a very chilly shot. I really like how the body of water sits encased by the mountain ranges. So much effort was put into creating these vast areas that are essentially empty in terms of gameplay but full of opportunity for photography. Frozen Lands Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @JadedVortex Assassin’s Creed Valhalla leans into the mythology both in the main story and the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC. With Gods like Odin and Thor who are so well known in pop culture it would have been a shame not to feature them. In Norse mythology the cold of Niflheim is often depicted in the manner of this shot. The cold barren lands are well represented here with some nice blue tones really adding to that freezing atmosphere. The dragon skin is the nice touch too as it has importance to Norse culture thanks to Níðhögg who was said to reside at the roots of Yggdrasil. This capture is exactly what I think of when recalling my time in the snowy mountains of Norway. - Ubisoft stuns with new article diving deeper into the world of Assassin's Creed Shadows | TheOnesWhoCameBefore
Ubisoft stuns with new article diving deeper into the world of Assassin's Creed Shadows News Share 17 Jan 2025 Written By: Edited By: Colum Blackett (Col_96) FrameHoldPhotography Back To Database Dynamic weather. Cherry blossoms. The sun rises over Japan in new Assassin's Creed Shadows gameplay. We would like to say a huge thank you to the Assassin's Creed community team for providing early access to AC Shadows material. The marketing campaign for Assassin's Creed Shadows is finally ramping up with the release of regular articles covering core aspects of the game. In the latest article featuring Game Director Charles Benoit, released today on the Ubisoft website, we get a better look at the expansive world of Assassin's Creed Shadows, and the activities that fill it. SNIPPET 1: WORLD MAP The clip starts with a closer look at an uncovered part of the map, showing that the player is on a river north of Shoryuji. The player leaves the map, and we get our first look at navigating Japan by boat. “When exploring the world, you should look out for undiscovered locations (i.e. “?” icons), because there are so many interesting places to seek out, whether in a destroyed camp or a hidden shrine, we want you to always feel a sense of discovery.” Thunder and lightning provide a moody atmosphere, and the perfect cover for a stealth approach. It looks like fireflies act as a lantern, sitting at the tail of the boat to provide a flicker of light. This method of transportation appears to be silent, moving swiftly with the river towards a destination. SNIPPET 2: VIEWPOINT Synchronization has changed Viewpoints are a staple of the Assassin's Creed series, and are returning in AC Shadows but with a difference. According to the article, “Rather than unveiling large sections of the world map along with all its opportunity icons, climbing viewpoints now reveal nearby points of interest as you observe your surroundings from the top of the high point: city districts, temples, shrines, castles - most of which are tied to quests or activities you’ll want to engage in.” We can see that the player is at the Osaka Tenshu viewpoint. From the vantage point, you can see that icons are visible on the mini map, and players have the option to place markers to highlight a specific destination. “By using the observe mechanic – first shown in our stealth overview article – you can move the camera manually through a 360-degree range to contemplate these points of interest and tag them” “Our goal in evolving the way viewpoints work was to give players a more intentional and active way to find their next adventure. For our long-time fans, you'll be pleased to know that on top of the new manual camera move feature, the iconic synchronized camera movement will also return. This will let you fully appreciate the stunning scenery around you.” It's interesting to see synchronization evolve after so many iterations, but it sounds like the more manual approach will allow players to discover opportunities and plan accordingly. SNIPPET 3: VANTAGE POINT Tagging enemies In the clip Naoe can be seen on a rooftop overlooking Kameyama Castle tagging enemies until her target is located. She observes her surroundings, highlighting enemies, watching their patterns, and discovering entry points, all giving her time to plan the perfect stealth approach from above Looking to her left, a beautiful cherry blossom tree sits within the castle walls. It also seems that numerous options are available around the perimeter for Naoe to use her grappling hook. For Yasuke however, gaining access to a rooftop will be trickier. “Yasuke will likely need to take the stairs and go through the guards to reach the top” Observing the enemies, we can see a level 34 guard, and another marked with a skull, indicating that he is an extremely high level. “In Shadows, we don’t have any companion Eagle to help you; now, you are the Eagle.” After locating the target, the camera zooms in and gives further details. This quest is all about finding Masatoshi Nakahara, who is marked on the objectives board. Throughout the map, players can discover ‘kakurega’ safehouses which act as ‘extensions of the Hideout (i.e. your central homebase that is fully customizable) and offer some of its practical functionalities such as refilling your rations/tools/ammunition, accessing your gear stash, managing and accepting contracts, and replenishing scouts as well as managing which allies can be summoned for help.’ This will be incredibly useful for players who venture far away from the hideout, and wish to resupply before planning their next attack. SNIPPET 4: PATHFINDER Horse travel In the next clip, we see Yasuke travelling through the trees on a horse, looking for the next objective, 1500 meters away. At the bottom, players have the option to turn on pathfinder. This will be incredibly useful as Japan's landscape is full of hills, some of which may be difficult to climb without paths due to the height or quantity of trees. When switched on, pathfinder appears as a winding line which the player follows until a path has been discovered. SNIPPET 5: OBJECTIVE BOARD Next we see the objectives page, which features allies and enemies. At the top we can see members of ‘The League’, which is marked with the Assassin logo. Could this be the local name for the Assassin Brotherhood? Presumably this footage is taken at the start of the game before further recruits are added, as only one member of The League can be seen around the Assassin insignia: A female dressed in a golden robe. Could she be the Mentor, or even Naoe’s mother? Another group at the top of the board, (allies), are ‘The People of Settsu’, who also appear to be quest-givers. Naoe and Yasuke can help the local people, which may lead to information or rewards. The player scrolls down, and we get our first look at the main enemy faction in the game, ‘The Onryo’. All dressed in masks, it is currently unknown if this faction are an offshoot of The Templar Order, or if they follow similar beliefs to The Order of Ancients. Wikipedia translation: In Japanese traditional beliefs and literature, onryō (怨霊, lit. 'vengeful spirit', sometimes rendered "wrathful spirits", "hatred spirits", "resentful spirits", "ruthless spirits", "envious spirits", "dark spirits", "fallen spirits", or "downcast spirits") are a type of ghost (yūrei) believed to be capable of causing harm in the world of the living, injuring or killing. I love the idea that the enemy faction in the game are seen across Japan as otherworldly, causing harm to the living. This is likely due to them operating from the shadows, and rumours spreading about their presence. The masks all look unique, some featuring horns, others imitating animals. Assassin's Creed Origins and most recently, Mirage did a great job at matching specific masks to enemy personalities, so it will be interesting to see if AC Shadows does something similar. Close to ‘ The Onryō’ at the bottom of the page are ‘The Kabukimono’, whose circles are positioned around a sword. Wikipedia translation: “Kabukimono were rōnin, wandering samurai, or men who had once worked for samurai families who, during times of peace, formed street gangs.” The in-game definition of this faction can be seen below. In particular, the player highlights ‘The Grave Dancer’, who seems to be the leader of a group of Kabukimono calling themselves ‘The Defilers’, believing that the world is corrupt and therefore nothing is sacred. From the objectives board, players can track quests using information they have gained, or go back to the map to send scouts to areas of interest to discover further details in regards to target locations. Finally, “When an alarm has been rung and an entire province has been put on high alert by your actions, you will be wanted and tracked down by deadly groups of enemies: the Guardians. While you can wait for the turn of the season, which happens dynamically over time, you can also switch protagonists or deploy some of your scouts to cancel the provincial alert. This will remove the aggressive attitude of the military patrols in the province and reduce the readiness levels of guards in military zones.” It sounds like this enemy faction will operate in a similar way to the zealots in Assassin's Creed Valhalla or the Mercenaries in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, chasing the player across the map. SNIPPET 6: SCOUT A short 20 second clip shows the map being used to locate a target in a specific area. The map is done in a Japanese watercolour art style. “The World Map is the backbone of exploration. You will start the game with a map that only reveals region names and drawings hinting at the potential nature of key locations. “ Similar to Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla, the game hints at a location and the player has to investigate. On the AC Shadows map, hints can be found in the top left corner. At the bottom of the map, you can see the option to dispatch scouts to retrieve information from a specific location. It looks like the maximum number of times a player can dispatch scouts is three times before they need recharged. “Once deployed, scouts will return at the end of the season and become deployable once again. However, you can always pay with in-game currency at a kakurega to speed up their return” “In Shadows, information is something you need to look for and earn, whether through your spies, NPC encounters, or through your own eyes.” ‘They are central to exploration and play a significant role in the war of information, which is an important aspect of your journey in Shadows.’ In the recently released episode 11 of our Rally the Creed podcast, Andy and Jen detail their hopes for the AC Shadows scout recruitment system. In a way, the scout system calls back to the original Assassin's Creed game, where information had to be earned before action could be taken. This exploration mentality returned in Mirage and is a great way for players to uncover details first instead of charging blindly into an important mission . SNIPPET 7: SMUGGLING Smuggling is a useful way to gain resources for the hideout, finding enemy supplies and marking them for collection. Over time, supplies can be used to upgrade the hideout, with lots of options available across an acre of land to truly make each hideout unique to the player. As the supplies are too large to be transported by Naoe or Yasuke, '‘they need to be marked with a flag to be smuggled out over time by one of your scouts. At the end of the season, all flagged stockpiles are cashed in for you to upgrade your Hideout.’' We can't wait to see what players do to their hideout to make it a central base of operations! SNIPPET 8: SUMI-E Japanese ink painting, al so known as sumi - e. Naoe sneaks up on a grey heron and observes her surroundings. After watching the bird bask in the sunshine, she captures the moment by painting. “For the more contemplative players, both Naoe and Yasuke can participate in the painting of wild animals of Japan, showcasing the diversity and majesty of its ecosystems.” In these quiet moments Naoe and Yasuke both have the opportunity to practice stealth and also enhance their focus, but for players, it's a nice calm activity that acts as a break from combat. “Naoe has a unique Kuji-kiri meditation activity that helps her focus her mind and reveals more about her life and backstory, while Yasuke will encounter people in the world that can teach him new weapon-specific Kata — special maneuvers you can unlock by performing a series of fight moves in a specific order with good timing. Yasuke can also show off his skills in various horse archery events.” “There is a lot to discover in the open world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, from temples to castles, hidden parkour trails to training grounds, and other secrets.” It's clear that the world of Assassin's Creed Shadows has a ton of activities for players to sink their teeth into, and the world offers a huge variety of opportunities for players to embark on that are both memorable and entertaining. Once again we would like to say a huge thank you to the Assassin's Creed community team for providing early access to the exploration article and for always supporting The Ones Who Came Before. This Week in Assassin's Creed Virtual Photography: Feb 26th - 5th March 2022 Community Share 21 Mar 2022 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Ashlea Blackett Back To Database Welcome to the new weekly virtual photography roundup hosted by Aaron Young from The AC Partnership Program. Every week, we will be picking our top 5 favourite Assassin’s Creed shots and showcasing them on The Ones Who Came Before website, in order to promote virtual photography and talented content creators within the community. Keep an eye on the site as more weekly shots are added, we are looking for capture across all Assassin’s Creed games. Tag your photos to the #TOWCBWeeklyCapture for a chance to be featured. 1) Renaissance Game: Assassin’s Creed II This week’s first capture comes from @hannyafoxdie over on Twitter. The scenery in Assassin’s Creed 2 is immense. The city of Venice is so vibrant, and this capture reflects it extremely well. I am always a fan of the protagonist standing on a rooftop. The colour of the tiles really pops in this image. I certainly appreciate the larger buildings in the distance and the waterway just below. 2) The Seaside Game: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Photo number two comes from @FeRa0408 over on Twitter. This capture is so colourful and striking. Kassandra walking through the red plants is very iconic, giving me Gladiator vibes. There really is a lot going on here, with the flock of birds in the sky and the two ships floating in the water. This is possibly one of my favourite Odyssey shots. 3) Sunlight Game: Assassin’s Creed This week’s third shot comes from @realKICKFLIPKID over on Twitter. Once again, we travel back to where it all began. I have not yet played the original since I entered the VP world. This is definitely a capture I would attempt, though. I love the bright sun blazing in from the right and the birds circling in the air. I am particularly impressed by the hidden blade sticking out as if Altair is about to strike. 4) Black and White Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP number four comes from @DagNammit86 over on Twitter. Black and white shots can often get missed, but this one stood out to me. I really like the depth of field drawing your eye to the archway which seems to make this image so bright. The simplicity is a breath of fresh air, minus the civilian this shot is pure environment. 5) Egyptian Hedj Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins The final capture of the week comes from @nkeiiin over on Twitter. Bayek and Origins captures are my favourites. Once again great use of the depth of field, really makes Bayek stand out amongst the burning sun. Nice to see Bayek in the Hedj robes, such an underrated look. I was so happy when they returned in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. And that sums it up for this week’s Assassin’s Creed virtual photography recap list! Thank you for checking out this week’s photo collection. This would not be possible without the virtual photographers out there so a huge thanks to them. - Reevaluating Assassin's Creed Valhalla | TheOnesWhoCameBefore
Reevaluating Assassin's Creed Valhalla Analysis Share 19 Jul 2024 Written By: Edited By: Finn Fletcher Colum Blackett Back To Database Despite being the best-selling Assassin's Creed game Valhalla definitely doesn't have the best reputation. This makes sense in a lot of ways, the game's bloated and unstructured, with weaker characters than its predecessors. Even the stellar gameplay foundations from Origins feel like they've been diluted between games. Yet, I've got a bit of a soft spot for this messy Norse adventure. At launch, I considered Valhalla one of my favourite games in the series, and was enthralled by England, Eivor and the Raven Clan. The disappointing ending, lacklustre DLCs (I've still not even bothered picking up Dawn of Ragnarok) and updates that I think genuinely made the game feel worse to play, went to destroy that excitement, and soured the far too many hours I'd put into exploring this world. I'm not sure exactly why, maybe watching Duke of Whales’ excellent new ACII narrative breakdown gave me the hood bug again, but I felt the need to return to England, picking up on a save I abandoned a while back just after completing my first alliance arc. And, to be honest, I can see why I liked it so much. Now, straight off the bat, it's worth saying that I don't hold it in as high a regard as I did back at launch. The game is clunky, it has so many moving pieces that rarely flow well together. While likeable, Eivor is neither as fun as Kassandra or as well-written as Bayek, making her strangely forgettable. So you get this oddity, a mish mash of things constantly fighting for the spotlight. But paved over those issues, is a brilliant atmosphere, enjoyable exploration and a compelling gameplay loop sending you on adventures across the country before returning to spend your spoils at your settlement. It doesn't overcome these core issues, and at times the cover will crack and you're reminded of its flaws. Yet, in those moments between, when the mask is on firmly and you can fall into this Viking assassin fantasy, the game works. Boarding the longboat, setting a target and listening to your crew tell tales is just so immersive. It makes you want to take things slow, soak in the funny and obtuse tales from Eivor’s band of Vikings or just listen to Jesper Kyd’s stellar score. Rather than a constant swarm of loot filling your HUD, you can forget about gear hunts for miniscule upgrades and just enjoy your time in this beautifully produced - if a bit over the top - recreation of England. Even things like the regional arcs and small narrative tales add to this sense. Eivor isn't Kassandra or Bayek, jumping between thousands of quests at once with an endless list of goals and targets. She's single minded. Everything is about the settlement, and while the arcs will see you spending a lot of time getting attached to the people of each of England's many regions, your targets remain contained and allow that immersive atmosphere to take priority. I really wish this is what the game put all its time into, sharpening the narrative arcs, preparing a satisfying conclusion where we see Aelfred form the Templars and cutting out the needless high fantasy elements. There's a game here that could take the strengths of the RPG trilogy, and make it work within the fantasy set out by Assassin's Creed I. Eivor's a constantly hunted outsider, taking down a corrupt political and religious order, being forced to face both the merits and failures of her beliefs - she's a precursor to Altair in many ways. Unfortunately, that story and game was drowned out by indecisiveness, misdirection and bloat. I only hope that Shadows doesn't make the same mistakes, but knowing Ubisoft Quebec… comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment. The best Roshan can hope for is a quick death. She certainly doesn’t expect a second chance offered by a cloaked stranger who says Roshan is exactly what they need: Someone who can disappear, who will do what needs to be done, someone expendable… Granted her freedom, Roshan joins a crew of shady figures assembled to steal a mysterious object being transported along the Silk Road towards Persia. Roshan’s otherworldly intuition proves vital as she fights to stay one step ahead of her backstabbing gang and survive the mission. For her employer holds the key to a world she can’t begin to fathom: a world she might have been destined for all along. Are we missing anything? Let us know and we will update the article. TOWCB Channel Trailer Released Other Share 29 Mar 2024 Written By: Edited By: TOWCB Team Colum Blackett Back To Database We are pleased to present the new and updated channel trailer for The Ones Who Came Before. edited by Team Leader Colum Blackett (@ Col_96 ), featuring music by Gustav Poulsen (@ Gargudon ). We hope that this trailer represents the relationship between the Core team and our Isu_Network, a global network of content creators around the world During the editing process, Col included two references that he hoped fans would pick up on. The first was the timing of the footage showing UbiCypher (Joe), Twitter lead admin for @ Isu_Network , which airs as the narration says that our content includes 'lore analysis and facts'. This is a nod towards Joe's daily posting schedule which includes Assassin's Creed lore and trivia. The second is right at the end, as Gargudon's narration says 'make sure to subscribe and follow us on socials', Col added footage of Ezio following a target on a rooftop. We hope that you enjoyed our new channel trailer! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
