Celebrating 17 Years of Assassin’s Creed: Reflecting on the Origins and Legacy of an Iconic Franchise Other Share 18 Nov 2024 Written By: Edited By: Zephryss Colum Blackett Back To Database Image: Official Poster by Ubisoft. On November 13, 2007, Ubisoft released Assassin’s Creed, a game that not only redefined the action-adventure genre but also sparked a cultural phenomenon. Set during the Third Crusade, the first Assassin's Creed title introduced players to a world of historical intrigue, philosophical conflict, and stealth-action gameplay that would go on to influence the gaming industry for years to come. Seventeen years later, we look back at the impact of Assassin’s Creed and the journey it began with Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, the mysterious Assassin who first captured players' imaginations. In 2014, we established The Ones Who Came Before Assassin's Creed Community, as a place for fans to share their thoughts and theories on the future of the franchise. Today, TOWCB is a global team of passionate Assassin's Creed content creators producing content for over 60,000 fans around the world. After ten strategic years building a strong and healthy relationship with both Ubisoft and fans, we are today a leading source of information within the community, and a recognisable brand. The Origin of an Assassin Assassin's Creed was originally planned as a spin-off of Prince of Persia and was an ambitious project led by Ubisoft Montreal. However, as the concept evolved, it became evident that the story of Assassins vs. Templars, linked with concepts of freedom and control, was far more expansive. As Altaïr, players explored Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus, completing undercover missions, combat encounters, and parkour-inspired exploration that was innovative at the time. Image: The Animus in Assassin's Creed. The game featured the Animus, a virtual reality device that allowed protagonist Desmond Miles to relive his ancestors' memories, combining the past with a modern-day storyline that added layers of mystery and lore to the franchise. This distinct blend of historical and sci-fi themes distinguished Assassin's Creed from its contemporaries, creating a complex narrative canvas that would be developed upon in subsequent games. Elements That Defined a Genre One of Assassin's Creed's most significant advances to gaming was its open-world design and emphasis on "social stealth," which allowed players to blend into crowds, eavesdrop on targets, and meticulously plan executions. The "Leap of Faith," a hallmark move in which Assassins dive from enormous heights into haystacks, has become one of the game's most recognizable components. These mechanics not only gave players more control over how they conducted missions, but they also helped to create a vivid historical environment. Image: Altaïr doing parkour on rooftop. At the time, this movement system felt groundbreaking, allowing players to interact with the environment in previously unseen ways. Altaïr excelled at parkour, which enabled him to easily scale buildings and navigate towns. While these mechanics have changed over time, the primary gameplay experience of the original Assassin's Creed established one of gaming's most recognizable styles. The Impact of Historical Narrative The first Assassin's Creed was more than simply a game; it was an interactive history lesson. Ubisoft's meticulous attention to detail in recreating historical settings provided gamers with an immersive experience that few other games could equal. The cities were precisely designed, based on historical research and architectural correctness. This dedication to realism became a trademark of the franchise, which went on to explore a variety of time periods, including the Renaissance in Assassin's Creed II, Ancient Egypt in Assassin's Creed Origins, and Viking Age England in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Image: Assassin's Creed II, Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla. This approach to storytelling established a pattern for subsequent games. History was an important part of the Assassin's Creed experience, rather than just a backdrop. The series encouraged players to investigate, debate, and appreciate history, frequently blurring the distinction between reality and fiction while teaching and entertaining. The Influence of Assassin's Creed in Gaming Culture Since its first release, Assassin's Creed has expanded into a massive multimedia series that includes more than a dozen mainline games, spin-offs, novels, comics, and even a feature film. It has introduced fans to a broad cast of characters, including Ezio Auditore, Bayek of Siwa, Eivor Varinsdottir, and Basim Ibn Ishaq. Each protagonist contributed a unique story and personality to the series, letting players to explore various parts of the Assassin Order and its principles. Image: Other protagonists in the franchise The popularity of the Assassin's Creed series encouraged other developers to explore historically inspired settings, leading in a larger trend of narrative-driven, open-world games. Assassin's Creed has influenced the design and approach to world-building of titles such as Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn, and The Witcher series. Image: Games that were inspired by Assassin's Creed. In addition, the Assassin's Creed franchise's adaptability and evolution have kept it relevant for the past 17 years. Ubisoft has continuously redesigned the game, from its stealth and parkour beginnings to the RPG aspects included in subsequent releases such as Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, to keep it fresh and exciting for both new and existing players. Seventeen Years Down the Line: The Path Ahead As we honor the 17th anniversary of Assassin's Creed, it's incredible to see how far the franchise has gone. Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Mirage, which will be launched in 2023 as a return to the series' stealth-focused beginnings, honors the original game's tradition while pushing limits. The future is bright, with planned expansions, spin-offs, and potentially other historical periods to discover. Assassin's Creed's legacy is not only defined by its revolutionary gameplay and engaging narrative, but also by its influence on how players see history and culture. The series has encouraged people all around the world to immerse themselves in other times, to investigate issues of power and freedom, and to envision a world where history and myth coexist. Image: Upcoming Assassin's Creed games. For both long-time fans and novices, Assassin's Creed continues to demonstrate the power of storytelling in gaming. The Altaïr series is a symbol of ambition, inventiveness, and a never-ending adventure, even after 17 years of glory. Huge thank you to everyone who has supported TOWCB this year, and especially to those who have been shopping via our Amazon links , helping to keep the site running and ad-free. Assassin's Creed Valhalla Review Look our for our review for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which was delayed due to the sheer size of the game, and time required to complete. By pushing our review back, we have given our fans a window to explore the game for themselves, and make up their own minds. It also gave fans who received the game for Christmas a chance to play without spoiler-related discussions appearing online. Here's a sneak peak: "There's never a dull moment whilst exploring the world of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, as it continues to find ways to surprise the player at every turn. It's the first game in the series to properly fill the open world, making it feel dynamic and life-like" Anti-Spoiler Filter Removed We will also be removing our Anti-Spoiler filter in January, meaning we will finally be discussing plot points and other elements that we have not yet covered. It's a great opportunity to dive into some Isu lore and dig our teeth into the real history that inspired the game. With the help of our Partnership Program team, we will be covering fresh aspects of the game that we have not yet explored. More opportunities and giveaways We were recently invited to join The Mentors Guild, an official community program that bridges the gap between community members and developers. So far, Ubisoft has so far arranged two giveaways (Valhalla codes) along with constant social media support, creating numerous opportunities for members of the AC community. We are looking forward to working closely with Ubisoft in the new year on the program, and strive to make the most of our new position. Wedding Prep! • This Week in Assassin’s Creed Virtual Photography: 10th to 16th July | TheOnesWhoCameBefore

This Week in Assassin’s Creed Virtual Photography: 10th to 16th July Community Share 18 Jul 2023 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Colum Blackett Back To Database Welcome to the weekly virtual photography roundup hosted by Aaron Young from The AC Partnership Program. Every week I will be picking our top 5 favourite Assassin’s Creed shots and showcasing them on The Ones Who Came Before website, in order to promote virtual photography and talented content creators within the community. Aaron is a keen virtual photographer and loves to post his journeys through Assassin’s Creed on Twitter. Keep an eye on the site as more weekly shots are added, we are looking for captures across all Assassin’s Creed games. Tag your photos to the #TOWCBWeeklyCapture for a chance to be featured. This week’s theme: Assassin’s Creed Randvi Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ JPGphotogame “I feel somewhat trapped. In this room, in this settlement, in this life.” The Norse glue that held the Raven Clan together. Randvi is the chief advisor of Ravensthorpe and the wife of Sigurd. Her part in this tale is critical but also very limited. I wish we had seen more of her throughout the story. This portrait of Randvi beautifully captures her unique style against the luscious backdrop of the English countryside. Excellent use of the depth of field function to highlight Randvi and showcase those soft eyes and elegant hair. Link to set: Druid Eivor Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ VirtuallyShots “I know what it is to be blood-bound, lord. It burns so bright it can blind to all else” This capture brings me back to the Wrath of the Druids expansion and the journey through Ireland. The ancient druidic cult that haunted that place was so interesting and acted as such a contrast to the dazzling landscapes that surround you. Eivor in this shot has clearly embodied the druid ways, for this capture exudes menacing vibes that are bringing out the dark side of our Viking hero. The face tattoo is really amplifying the whites of his eye, and the bones on his head are increasing the spiritual feel. I really like the addition of the logo at the bottom as it makes it look like a movie poster. Sekhmet Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ Its__Gurly “Like the orb of Siwa. How much more bloodshed and madness will this bring” The Goddess of war and the destroyer of enemies, this bloodthirsty deity serves as a trail of the Gods in Assassin’s Creed Origins. These weekly events were super fun and the birth of what was to come in Odyssey and Valhalla. This particular shot is from an epic set showcasing Bayek and Sekhmet deep in battle. I picked this shot as it looks impressive and very blockbuster movie in its style. Bayek looks visually stunning here with details popping all over the place. I also adore the stance with the shield up and sword drawn. The background tops it off with a real sandstorm ambiance. Link to set: Hobbits Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ NoviKaiba23 “I feel that as long as the Shire lies behind, safe and comfortable, I shall find wandering more bearable” Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is one of the larger gaming worlds out there and it is mind blowing what Ubisoft managed to produce in terms of world building. The environments are all breath-taking and the choice to split them into seasons was genius. Novi has once again produced a set of landscape shots that beautifully showcase what Valhalla has to offer. I picked this shot because it reminds me of The Lord of the Rings and specifically the Shire. The saturation is on point as the greenery in this capture is so gorgeous. I am very impressed with the smaller details such as the shrine, villagers and fisherman. It is very extraordinary how much is going on here despite the beautiful simplicity of the shot. Link to set: The Ones Who Came Before Photo of the Week Judge: @ TheHiddenValar ''As a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I gotta choose 'The Hobbit' That area reminds me of The Shire.'' The Queen Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ dpruttz_vp “I loved it all. The power, the challenge, everything. But above all, I loved Egypt. Believed in it. And still do” Origins has definitely seen a renaissance in recent weeks, most likely due to Mirage’s marketing. It’s been great to see people jump back into the game and capture some superb shots. The amazing introduction of discovery mode allowed us to explore without combat but ultimately play as different characters. This shot is part of a phenomenal set that sees Cleopatra wandering the desert. For me this is the best one from the set, as the pale toned down colours are just so warming. I love how it has an old western vibe, especially with the barren desert all around her. It is a majestic shot that is fit for a Queen. Link to set: And that sums it up for this week’s Assassin’s Creed virtual photography recap list! Thank you for checking out this week’s photo collection. This would not be possible without the virtual photographers out there so a huge thanks to them. Until next week keep those shots coming in! comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Compartilhe sua opinião Seja o primeiro a escrever um comentário. • Assassin's Creed News Recap: 21st - 27th August 2022 | TheOnesWhoCameBefore

Assassin's Creed News Recap: 21st - 27th August 2022 News Share 29 Aug 2022 Written By: Edited By: Colum Blackett (Col_96) Ashlea Blackett Back To Database Welcome to a new Assassin's Creed News Recap series, hosted by Colum Blackett (Col_96) from The Ubisoft Star Players Program (Formerly Mentors Guild). Every week, we will be rounding up Assassin's Creed News and sharing it here on The Ones Who Came Before website. Keep an eye on the site every Sunday for more weekly recaps, or check out our social media links down below to stay updated on everything Assassin's Creed. 1 ) Assassins in Need Merchandise Sale Launched We kick off this week's news recap by returning to our Assassin's Creed community fundraiser, which is raising funds for The British Heart Foundation and American Heart Association. To mark £400 raised for the cause so far, we here at TOWCB launched a merchandise sale featuring a design created by team member Thea Rivedal! You can now pre-order Assassins In Need T-shirts, which are available in both short or long sleeve until the 13th September. 100% of the proceeds support the 2022 community fundraiser, so this is a great opportunity to make a difference, and also look incredible with beautiful limited edition merchandise! Huge thank you to everyone who has supported the cause so far. Pre-order your Assassins in Need merchandise now 2) More Community Creations Shared on Social Media The 15 Year Anniversary celebrations continued this week with more community content commissioned by Ubisoft. On the 24th August, the official Assassin's Creed social media channels shared two stunning new designs by Instagram user alenoc.artworks! There's no doubt that these two designs make incredible wallpapers, featuring an array of fan-favourite characters, paying homage to the series and its history. Even deeper than that though, the images could also provide a real starting point for Assassin's Creed Infinity, offering a glimpse at how a live-service Assassins' Creed game could look if handled properly. As September approaches, we are all eagerly awaiting the Ubisoft Forward event which takes place on the 10th, which is set to reveal the future of Assassin's Creed. Perhaps we will also get our first look of the mysterious 'Infinity' project? 3) Ezio Auditore Statue Unveiled in France Ubisoft proudly unveiled a huge statue of Ezio Auditore at the Saint Mandé studio in France! It technically would have made more sense to launch an Arno Dorian statue (French Brotherhood) considering the location, but no-one can deny Ezio's fame and popularity. The statue itself stands on a plinth featuring the Assassin insignia, and can be found front and centre at the entrance to the building. We love the idea that Ezio now keeps watch over the studio, working in the dark to serve the light. The statue also lends itself nicely to fans looking for a photo opportunity, and will find itself becoming popular to those adventuring out on an Assassin's Creed pilgrimage across Europe. We can also confirm that the statue is not made of chocolate, despite some confusion on Twitter. Are you going to visit the Ezio statue? Tag @ ACFirstCiv for a retweet on Twitter! 4) Fan Expo Canada 2022 The Ubisoft Booth at Fan Expo Canada 2022 did a great job at celebrating the 15th anniversary of Assassin's Creed. Those attending the event could participate in giveaways to win exclusive collector items, play the games on multiple platforms, and also take photos with life-sized statues! Ubisoft invited members of the Ubisoft Canada Guild (featuring Assassin's Creed Brand Ambassadors) to attend the event, which for many would be the first in-person AC related event in a very long time. It's so great to see the world open up again once more, hosting events on a large-scale. The Creed bringing people together is a beautiful thing. 5) Assassin's Creed Cosplay Competition at Insomnia i69 Gaming Fest (Birmingham, UK) Insomnia i69 saw a collaboration between Ubisoft, CosXpo and Insomnia, with the event hosting an Assassin's Creed Cosplay Competition to mark 15 years of the series! The cosplay competition was judged by Tabitha Lyons, Psycadillo, Helen Alice and Magnus Bruun, and hosted by CJ Allan! Awards: Best in Show: @ creedcosplay Best Performance: @ OthrysEternal Honourable Mention: @ megabethbob Huge congratulations to Jamie Oakley for winning the Best of Show award! It's fair to say that the competition was very hard to judge, so well done to all the talented cosplayers who took part and also to the judges! 6) Gamescom 2022 (Cologne, Germany) The final event featuring Assassin's Creed content this week was Gamescom 2022, which saw Assassin's Creed cosplayers looking for the PureArts booth in order to win Ezio Auditore statues and editions of Orlog! Over at the Ubisoft booth, all were welcome in the community lounge, a chill zone complete with a bar. This was no doubt a great opportunity for fans to re-energise after what can be a long and tiring day. Congratulations to all who won PureArts products! 7) Assassin's Creed Animus Next Launched Ubisoft China launched a new interactive online platform titled Assassin's Creed Animus Next! The website, which acts as a business site for Abstergo Industries, features information about the company, its history, and future plans! Users can login to the site as an Abstergo employee, unlock information about Assassin's Creed characters and win prizes! It's so cool to see a platform like this back online. After the closure of both Assassin's Creed Initiates and Project Legacy many years ago, fans have dreamt of their re-activation. This new project seems to be heavily inspired by the latter, as users would unlock information through participating in daily quizzes about the series. Although the platform and the trailer have released in Chinese, the team over at Access the Animus have translated the trailer and some of the portal menus! If you're interested in this, we suggest heading over to their Twitter account for more details. You can view the platform for yourself here. 8) The Ones Who Came Before Meet-up I was incredibly pleased to be able to meet Gustav Poulsen (host of The Memory Corridor Podcast and member of the Assassin's Creed Partnership Program) during his time here in the UK! Gustav (Gargudon), who is based in Denmark, has been a friend of the TOWCB admin team for nearly seven years now, and it was an absolute pleasure to meet in real life. I set off to Manchester via train to meet Gustav, and gave him an insight into what a UK weekend can look like. Naturally, we ended up in a pub to watch the football, but as is often the case with old friends, we reflected on the past, and how the Assassin's Creed series and community have changed over the years. We also looked towards the future, and both agreed that a more stealth-based direction could be beneficial for the series, leaving dragons and mythology behind. We'll learn more about the future of Assassin's Creed at the Ubisoft Forward event on September 10th. Although Gustav is currently taking some time away from social media, he has found comfort in his music, helping him heal after a damaging lockdown period which affected the world in so many different ways. After so many years, it felt like fate to finally meet, right on the edge of a life-changing event in my own life: the birth of my son. 9) The Golden City Synopsis released In the last recap article, we reported that several retailers including Amazon and IndieBound had listed an upcoming novel titled 'Assassin's Creed: The Golden City', written by Jaleigh Johnson & published by Aconyte Books, which is set to release February 7th 2023! Here is the full synopsis for the novel! ''A young emperor’s life hangs in the balance in ancient Constantinople, and only the Brotherhood of Assassins can save him, in this action-packed historical adventure from the award-winning Assassin’s Creed universeConstantinople, 867 – A murderous plot is afoot. But that is not his only mission… Hytham’s brotherhood have entrusted him with uncovering where Basim’s true loyalties lie and whether the master Assassin’s personal obsessions outweigh his sense of duty. • Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe Teaser Analysis | TheOnesWhoCameBefore

Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe Teaser Analysis Analysis Share 11 Sept 2022 Written By: Edited By: Preston Carbonaro Ashlea Blackett Back To Database Fans of the franchise were given a goodie bag filled with treats at the Ubisoft Forward Assassin's Creed Showcase event , ranging from a gorgeous cinematic trailer for the much-awaited Assassin’s Creed Mirage, updates on the upcoming Netflix show, a new mobile game, and tantalising teaser trailers for future games. One short, eerie trailer in particular - for Codename Hexe - featuring barking dogs, bare trees, and an open fire, has left fans and codebreakers alike intrigued and perplexed. In his segment during the Ubisoft Forward event, Marc-Alexis Côté – executive producer of the Assassin's Creed franchise - said that he’ll leave it up to us to spot the little secrets. So, let’s get down to business! Starting from the most prominent object in the image. The Assassins symbol, of course. As you can see, it is made out of twigs and twine; very primitive in design. Personally, I couldn't help but think of handmade Halloween decorations when I saw this. More specifically decorations used by pagans during Samhain. Which brings me to my second observation. What seems to be an eight-pointed star (octagram) drawn in chalk on the wall behind the AC insignia. Octagrams have various different interpretations and meanings in various religions around the world, but I decided to focus more on Paganism and Occultism as that seemed to be the theme of the content. Lo and behold, my research eventually led me to The Wheel of the Year, an annual cycle of seasonal festivals, observed by many modern pagans, consisting of the year's main solar events (solstices and equinoxes) and the midpoints between them. A few more searches further confirmed my hunch. The images below are similar to what is seen in the Hexe reveal trailer. Writer’s note: The Yule, Ostara, and Lammas festivals all feature in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. There was also The First Night of Samhain quest. And what of the text in the Hexe diagram, you ask? My first guess was the Theban alphabet, also known as the Honorian alphabet, Runes of Honorius, or witches' alphabet due to its use in modern Wicca and other forms of witchcraft. However, upon further inspection and more research, I concluded it to be from The Alphabet of the Magi. A variant of the Hebrew alphabet, it was used for inscriptions in talismans in 17th-century occultism. It also seems that the chalk wall behind the Assassin's Creed insignia hold a secret, as discovered by Community Member Boukhari Adam. The letters are actually from the Magi alphabet, and spell out ''We work in the dark to serve in the light!''. See how everything is linked? Let’s analyse further... “Codename Hexe” (pronounced hex-uh). ‘Hexe’ is the German word for ‘witch’. In English we use very similar words like ‘hex’ or ‘hexed’, which mean: to cast a spell on; to bewitch. So, taking into consideration all of these ideas and how closely related they are to each other, I am assuming that Codename Hexe will revolve around the witch trials which took place in 17th century Germany. Namely the Würzburg witch trials of 1625-1631. Let us know what you think. Would you be interested in playing an Assassin’s Creed game which involves such themes? And what do you think about the possible setting? One thing is for sure. Dark times lie ahead. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment. This Week in Assassin’s Creed Virtual Photography: 18th to 24th September Community Share 26 Sept 2023 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Colum Blackett Back To Database Welcome to the weekly virtual photography roundup hosted by Aaron Young from The AC Partnership Program. This week’s theme: Assassin’s Creed Enter the Light Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ maddog7794 “The holy women Fulke is close by.” Fulke is a member of the Order of the Ancients, and is also known as the Instrument. She is a devilish character who torments the Raven clan with her wicked ways. She inflicts a lot of pain on Sigurd and in turn makes herself an enemy of Eivor. This incredible capture of her tells the story of a troubled women seeking power. The lighting is exceptional, allowing Fulke to appear as a silhouette. I love how you can see the cross next to her head showing the faith she once had before turning to the dark side. Seeing her walk towards the light is a bit of a metaphor, after her failed attempts to destroy Eivor. The Ones Who Came Before Photo of the Week Judge : Jack ( @ _Virtualtourism ) - TOWCB Virtual Photography Team ''Fulke's silhouette standing tall breaking through the orange light of the evening sun as it pours through the forest trees, makes for an excellent shot. I feel this image best represents how I imagine Fulke saw her task when she first met Eivor and Sigurd. Represented by the cross on her back, her faith has led her to this moment, she will now lead Eivor and Sigurd into the next (or past) chapters of their lives. Amazing shot, well done Zatoichi!'' Silhouette Game: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey VP Artist: @ AkillesDHero “Spartans! Prepare for glory!” Sparta, a small town in Greece is one of the most famous locations in history. Sparta had a reputation of being a production line for the most fearsome warriors. None more so than Kassandra, despite her conflicted upbringing you can definitely see the Spartan in her. This beautiful shot of her standing almost statue-like in front of that warming background is so delightful. The colour tones are captivating, and the silhouette of Kassandra is stunning. I adore how she has the Spartan helmet on but also has the trident on her back, this shot represents Odyssey perfectly. Link to Set: Shield Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ Lucascosta797 “I cannot shed my past like a snake sheds its skin” Despite the Medjay shield being extremely popular it is actually the Alexander shield that you see Bayek with on most promotional material. It is a rare shield in the game that obviously once belonged to Alexander the Great. The winged scarab design fits the Egyptian setting perfectly. This photo flawlessly captures the shield and its impeccable design. I am a fan of the composition here as it allows us to see the shield mounted on Bayek’s back with few arrows still in the quiver. The use of shadows helps the golden wings of the scarab to shine, and I find myself constantly drawn it. Link to Set: Desolate Land Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ ophierian_vp “The only thing that awaits you is oblivion” Assassin’s Creed Origins is full of remote deserts for us to explore. The sheer scale of them is so impressive. Venturing into these isolated places is a dangerous pastime. Many suffer from hallucinations due to the extreme heat, something Ubisoft brilliantly added to the game. This remarkable capture showcases the very secluded feel and the minimalism of the shot is quite something. I love how Senu is gliding above Bayek and the shadow of him on the horse is epic. A perfect composition that highlights this striking capture. Synchronisation Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ TuridTorkil “Not one of your prophecies do I understand” Eivor’s destiny is hers to weave and the constant torment of Odin is a chain she would love to break. Life is never easy for the Wolf-Kissed and her battle against the Order and herself take its toll. She will always be the hero of this saga though. This incredible capture of her crouched atop a longhouse feeds both the Viking and Assassin vibes. You could easily see her performing the leap of faith from this point. The black and white style perfectly suits the shot giving it a classic feel. I love the vines connecting to her as they symbolise the roots of the Yggdrasil and Eivor breaking free of them. She is now free to walk her own path, and forge her own destiny. And that sums it up for this week’s Assassin’s Creed virtual photography recap list! Thank you for checking out this week’s photo collection. This would not be possible without the virtual photographers out there so a huge thanks to them. John Wick Temporized Breakdown Share 3 Aug 2023 Written By: Edited By: ActualSpider-Man Colum Blackett Back To Database Welcome to another Assassin's Creed deep dive, this time covering the John Wick film series! In this extensive 316 page breakdown, ActualSpider-Man from the Isu Network Writing Team analyses the similarities between the John Wick franchise and Assassin's Creed! We hope that you find this comprehensive research inciteful! John Wick _ Temporized .pdf Download PDF • 227.28MB Warning: Document is 227mbs Released June 2023: ''With the fourth and (we all know it’s not) “final” Chapter of the John Wick series about to hit home collections, it’s my pleasure to present the most thorough timeline of events you’ll likely ever find! Beginning with my need to know more on the Blood Marker’s back sporting a connection to Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, I’ve spent the last couple months compiling factoids and context that is notoriously slathered in mystery, and I’ve attempted to give us as many interesting insights pulled from the intricately esoteric web of intrigue the series of John Wick speaks to. Stripping all the named players in The High Table’s Assassins, and highlighting the rules and dealings behind their shadow economy, you’ll then be dipping your pinkie into the “Temporized” timeline using all kinds of cited sources that allude to the larger world, laid bare for others to connect. It includes all 4 films entirely scripted, the 2 official spin-off games and John Wick’s Payday outings, the John Wick: Book of Rules comic run teasers/explanation, all we know on the unreleased Continental mini series and Ballerina film, and a few theoretical connections! I did try to stick to strictly charting the cars and weapons John himself interacts with, as the doc is already sizable, but there’s a few really cool things I’m dying to point out here for those that think they’ve seen it all: I’ve fully timed 1-4 down to the minute if shown, and found a never-before-seen tidbit in John Wick Chronicles that tells that little bit more about the femme fatale, Ms. Perkins… then we get into the connections to The Package (2013) and Nobody (2021), with all Administrative documents meticulously pulled apart too, revealing all kinds of missable timeable facts that even the fandom Wiki doesn’t chart! (Not even mentioning there’s no timeline in sight on there, either!) All this and more awaits inside these 316pgs of High Table secrets. I have served. I will be of service. Now it’s your choice. And by all means, if there’s anything I’m missing that you’d like to see covered, do share so I can better refine this in the future! • Event Log: Assassin's Creed Mirage Red Carpet Digital Event | TheOnesWhoCameBefore

Event Log: Assassin's Creed Mirage Red Carpet Digital Event Events Share 9 Nov 2023 Written By: Edited By: Colum Blackett (Col_96) TOWCB Team Back To Database Just before the launch of Assassin's Creed Mirage, we were invited to attend an online event exclusively for community members. The event was unlike any other we have ever attended, and featured a mini game where everyone controlled a 'chibi-style' Basim. All players had a username attached, and when you approached audio and video would appear for those interacting nearby. Dotted around the cartoon mini map of Baghdad were also members of the Development team, who players could ask questions of before the game launched. It was a really unique experience, that also contained rewards. By clicking on items of importance around the map, such as Basim's armour or weapons, videos and concept art would reveal itself, all of which was shared with players after the event in the form of an assets pack. After some time interacting with developers and community members, players were invited to join a mini game which involved removing Basim's notoriety status. Wanted posters appeared around the map, featuring different colours which represented the various different teams. When Basim's notoriety had been reset, players met up at the Palace of the Green Dome. Here, host Clement Dagonneau announced that the Red Carpet event would soon be ending, and that a one hour play session for Assassin's Creed Mirage would be starting immediately. According to fellow Assassin's Creed Fan Community, Access the Animus , participants tested the ''Andromeda online p latform''. It featured an ''isometric chibi version of Baghdad where players can wander around with a Basim avatar.'' The Red Carpet event was a fun and interesting way for community members to learn about the game, with many in the Discord server requesting Ubisoft to host the platform permanently. Top marks to all involved for their creativity. Big thank you to the Assassin's Creed Community Team for inviting us! • Assassin's Creed Shadows World Premiere Cinematic Trailer Breakdown | TheOnesWhoCameBefore

Assassin's Creed Shadows World Premiere Cinematic Trailer Breakdown Breakdown Share 17 May 2024 Written By: Edited By: UbiCypher (Joe) Colum Blackett Back To Database We are pleased to release our analysis of the recently released World Premiere Trailer for Assassin's Creed Shadows, highlighting some of the things you might have missed! Written by UbiCypher (@ Kenway_Joe ) from Isu_Network . From the Shadows The trailer begins with a target fleeing for his life through a forest. He knows that he is being pursued, but cannot see the identity of those hunting. We see the target remove a throwing star from his armour (Shuriken) . Next we get our first glance at Shinobi Warrior Naoe, who emerges from the shadows. She looks like she is wearing light armour, so should be able to move quickly in comparison to her counterpart, Yasuke. Iga: The land of Ninjas The Ubisoft logo appears over a cinematic representation of Iga, the land of Ninjas. Scattered across the countryside were remote villages training the next generation of Shinobi warriors. After coming into dispute with Military leader Oda Nobunaga over unification , Iga was attacked on two occasions, one of which occurred in 1579, the year in which the game takes place. It is said that the attacked came from three directions, giving the villagers little chance to respond. In Assassin's Creed Shadows, Naoe is the daughter of r eal-life shinobi Warrior Fujibayashi Nagato. Naoe's life is turned upside down when enemy forces bring the blade to her village, burning everything in their wake. Dual Protagonists The Fiery Shinobi and the Giant Samurai. It seems that the long rumored dual protagonism is due to make a comeback in this new iteration of the franchise. Missed by many and despised by others, it will most certainly blend well with the story Ubisoft seems eager to tell us in this game which revolves around unity. This concept is on the nose brought back from Assassin's Creed Unity, in this case being an alliance that will, by the looks of it, make you go to war against the ruthless opression spawned by Greed, Power and Vengeance all of them very familiar motives to this franchise. Naoe and Yasuke our protagonists are -according to the Game Director Charles Benoit- designed in a way that focus on their abilites is evident; Stealth for Naoe and Combat for Yasuke although "They can do a bit of both" confirming that you can even the gameplay between the two. Naoe Fujibayashi With a stealth & infiltration-oriented gameplay, you take on a quest of vengeance and honor that will show her cunning and skill in the Iga arts of the Ninja with a set of classic Japanese tools according to the trailer: Shuriken and a Kusarigama. Unexpectedly, she wields a dual-action Hidden Blade similar to the blade worn by Connor Kenway in Assassin's Creed III -which could make one wonder if the hunt mechanic is back- but I digress. Described as fiery she will probably leave her mark on the community. Yasuke the Samuari If you followed my thread on Yasuke a month ago and the countless videos out there that emerged ever since the first rumor leaked, then you should know who he is by now. If not, well, let's do a quick recap! Either from Ethiopia or South Africa, Yasuke was a slave or mercenary -depending on the sources- that was brought on board a ship with Alessandro Valignano a Jesuit that sought to extend the will of Catholicism across Japan in 1579. Due to his appearance and uncommon stature, he impressed the Shogun Oda Nobunaga who made him his vassal. With this in mind, we can understand his status as Samurai in this story and the possible motives behind his actions due to his turbulent past. He's evidently the action/combat oriented character with the ability to crush his enemies with ease, break doors and armor from tougher enemies and such, while the trailer did not show much of his weaponry we can but assume that he will carry what you would expect of a Samurai. Assassination Contracts or Theft missions Oldschool contracts might be back... At some point in the trailer, you can see Naoe passing on a piece of paper to Yasuke, if you translate the note it says "There is Tono Hakeda Catle" which can possibly be read as "It is at the Tono Hakeda Castle" possibly referring to a target or an object to steal. Since the Brotherhood has been established for 14 years by 1579 and many prominent members have been recruited into the Assassins as well, it would be safe to assume that a network of Assassins is already deeply rooted across the Islands, which would explain this informant here. Absence of Templars Nothing in my cross hairs for now... There is no trace of Templar activity in the trailer whatsoever, even though we know that the Tokugawa Clan and Nobunaga Clan have been fighting with Templar-backed clans in the past such as the Takeda Clan. I should add that according to the lore, the Templars were all but exterminated in Japan by 1615, having struggled against the Assassins during all their continued activity in the country ever since the Assassins arrived in between 1565 and 1571, maybe not entirely being present. Personal Commentary As far as I'm concerned, I found this trailer intense and different from other AC trailers, there is something I quite can't get a hold on but I like where this is going, at least according to the official Ubisoft website the game won't be RPG stating "Action/Adventure". Here are a number of other breakdowns of the trailer! Let us know your thoughts down below! comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Compartilhe sua opinião Seja o primeiro a escrever um comentário. • Assassin's Creed Movie: London Fan Screening Event | TheOnesWhoCameBefore

Assassin's Creed Movie: London Fan Screening Event Events Share 22 Dec 2016 Written By: Edited By: Colum Blackett (Col_96) Ashlea Blackett Back To Database On the 18th December 2016, I attended an Assassin's Creed Movie Fan Screening in London. Special thanks to UbiJollyCharly and Ubi-QuB3. This Article contains Minor Spoilers for the Assassin's Creed Movie. When Laureline (UbiJollyCharly) invited me to the Assassin's Creed Fan Screening, I was quite surprised to be asked, as I had already attended a Press Event (London) and Gamescom (Germany) this year alone. I immediately accepted the invitation, and started packing my bags for London. I couldn't believe that I would be one of the first in the UK to see the Assassin's Creed Movie. On the 18th, I caught the train from Chester (Where my Uni is) to London Euston. There I met Dom (Ubi-QuB3) from the Assassin's Creed Team. We then walked to the hotel and prepared for the Fan Screening. Movie Advertisement at London Euston. After about an hour, we travelled to the event which was being held in the West End. Immediately we knew we were in the right place, as everyone in sight wore Assassin's Creed T-shirts and Hoodies. The fans were mainly Assassin's Creed Cosplayers, and many others who had won Fox Competitions. Before the screening I spoke to several AC Fans, and they were all excited for the Movie. I met Beth from Amazonian Cosplay Beth from Amazonian Cosplay was wearing her Maria Robes, which looked absolutely amazing! The event was packed, and all the AC Fans were taking pictures with the Aguilar and Maria Robes which were on display. After 45 minutes, everyone began to surrender their phones to security and enter the screening. Reunited with my fellow Assassin, Fae We all took our seats, and waited for the Movie to begin. I could tell that everyone in the room was really excited to see the movie early. I certainly was! The lights went out, and we were greeted with a message from Michael Fassbender and Justin Kurzel. They told us that we were amongst the first in the UK to see the Assassin's Creed Movie, and that they had worked very hard on it. The film began, and I couldn't help but pick apart the first 20 minutes (As I had seen a different version at a Press Event in May). I could spot major differences to the footage I had seen previously in May. Bits of which I had enjoyed had been removed, such as music by The Black Angels and the Apple Pickings Poem by Robert Frost. The little girl saying "Your Blood is not your Own" to Cal as he ran around the Abstergo facility was also unfortunately removed. The first 20 were not as creepy as what I had seen previously, but still made me feel sorry for Cal. Although I was noticing major changes, I still enjoyed the first 20 minutes. New bits had been added, such as young Cal trying to make a jump on his bike. Young Cal on his bike After 20 minutes had passed and Cal was placed in the Animus, I could stop comparing the Movie to the footage I had previously seen. I watched it as a fan of Assassin's Creed and Movies in general. I was overall really impressed with the film. The Animus 3.5 was absolutely great, and the cuts between Cal and Aguilar made total sense. The Bleeding effect was creepy once again, and felt like a real problem that could drive subjects insane. From the start I felt really sorry for Cal. His life is pain. The colours used in the film are extremely artistic, and Kurzel's style shines through. I found myself in awe at many of the scenes. I was very impressed with the film, and even though the plot was not as complicated as in the games (as not to confuse new audience members), it felt like Assassin's Creed. By this, I mean it actually feels like an Assassin's Creed Story that fits into the Universe, and not a film based on Assassin's Creed. The film was great, and I hope that everyone else enjoys it as much as I did. Please don't be put off by critics. Go and see the movie yourselves, and let me know what you think! The Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins Minor Plot Spoilers below Something I really liked that had not been in the footage (Press Event) were flashbacks and Memories as Cal is given the Lethal Injection. One of them shows him as a boy with his mother. This only adds to the weight of empathy we feel towards Cal. This was a great addition! Cal with his Mother The device used to cut Aguilar's finger is much more ceremonial than anything we have seen in the past. I had previously seen the device, as it is on display in ArcLight Cinema in Hollywood, but did not know it's purpose. It was also the first time in the franchise that we had actually seen an Assassin lose a finger! Initiation block Cal becoming a Modern Day Assassin! Ever since the death of Desmond, i've been hoping to see a strong lead Assassin in the franchise. Cal could well be the next big Modern Day Assassin. The Bleeding Effect hits him quickly, and his abilities are clearly impressive! I would love to see him again. Callum Lynch People who do not comply with the Animus become docile! This was scary to see. People who do not use the Animus properly lose their minds! Dislikes and Queries: The inclusion of Christopher Columbus. Does this contradict established Lore? Cal singing whilst using the Animus............ "We work in the Darkness to serve the Light". Mary Lynch. The Apple of Eden is now green when used. Did the film say a Templar had never held an Apple of Eden? (I'll need to rewatch to check this. Obviously wrong if this was indeed said) The ways in which the Apple could remove Violence are never explained. After the film, we watched the Leap of Faith trailer live. So glad he performed it without hurting himself! Thank you so much to everyone at Ubisoft and Fox who made this event possible!Overall, I really enjoyed the film. and plan on seeing it again soon. Thanks again to Dom and Laureline from the Assassin's Creed Team! comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment. Assassin’s Creed Virtual Photography: 20th to 31st May Community Share 12 Jun 2024 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Colum Blackett Back To Database Welcome to the biweekly virtual photography roundup hosted by Aaron Young from the AC Partnership Program. Every two weeks we will be picking our top 5 favourite Assassin’s Creed shots and showcasing them on The Ones Who Came Before website, in order to promote virtual photography and talented content creators within the community. This theme has been run by the TOWCB VP team. We have been monitoring the hashtag and the community hub to see all your wonderful shots. Keep an eye on the site as more shots are added, we are looking for captures across all Assassin’s Creed games. Tag your photos to #ACFirstCivVP for a chance to be featured. Theme: From Red to Shadows Red Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: Rosshiro (@ q9j9p ) The Ones Who Came Before Photo of the Week Judge: @ CapturesByRenzo Renzo A few weeks ago, AC Codename Red was finally revealed as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in feudal Japan. In order to celebrate the occasion, we decided to run the “From Red to Shadows” theme. During the last couple of weeks, we saw many amazing shots from the AC community, but this particular photo stood out. Taken in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, this shot from Rosshiro captures the essence of the theme, showing Eivor in the Yurei Bushido armour set, as well as their mount and their loyal raven Sýnin. The colour splash was perfectly executed and makes the red tones stand out from the rest of the scene. Let’s not forget about the great composition. Take all these elements and you get a winning shot. Congratulations Rosshiro. Aaron (@ FalconSwift9 7 ) “We must honour their sacrifice”. What I enjoyed about last year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage announcement was the creativity we saw from the virtual photography community in recreating shots in Assassin’s Creed Origins. This time an even bigger challenge has been set with the Japanese theme proving trickier. That being said, this capture fully embraces the theme with the red colour splash and the Assassin’s Creed Shadows logo present. The Yurei Bushido armour set means you’re a far cry from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and fully embracing the Japanese setting. Excellent work from Rosshiro and fully deserving of shot of the week. Blade in the Dark Game: Assassin’s Creed Mirage VP Artist: Raven (@ Cll3ar ) “Where has my path brought us?”. I am expecting Assassin's Creed Shadows to bring a lot of katana photo opportunities. This weapon is one of the most elegant swords in history. The unmistakable curved edged blade with that magnificent square guard and wrapped grip is a sight to behold. Raven has managed to replicate that grace with her beautiful black background shot. Basim’s blade looks deadly with the lighting perfect for showcasing the stunning details of the sword. I also love how the light elevates Basim’s hood. You get a real Assassin vibe from this photo coupled with the darker tones of the Valhalla robe. A truly exceptional piece of virtual photography. Flame Bearer Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ NickVPgamer “How dare you think your destiny, your greatness, outweighed all of ours”. The torch is a real virtual photographer’s dream, when lighting isn’t quite right it can be deployed to great effect. I remember seeing the early photos from the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla announcement and there were quite a few that featured the torch. Eivor looks so good here with that warming glow from the fire highlighting his Raven Clan outfit. The way the light falls on the hood and his lips leave a perfect shadow across the eyes. That cold wintery background uplifts the capture further enhancing the effects of the torch. An awesome capture that takes me back to the launch trailers for Valhalla. Misthios Game: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey VP Artist: @ _fallenmemory_ “Sometimes the face we show to the world needs to be one of strength, despite the chaos we harbour underneath.” Kassandra has become a real fan favourite, especially for us virtual photographers. Her character design is quite something and lends itself to being captured. Although Kassandra will never be considered a real Assassin, her part in the bloodline is extremely important for what will unfold in Egypt. This striking portrait is completely up my street, with the gorgeous, muted blacks and the excellent shadow work. I adore how the red of the Misthios outfit blends with the dark to really encapsulate this week’s theme. For me this is a real movie moment where the hero appears from nowhere to enact justice. Red Mist Game: Assassin’s Creed Mirage VP Artist: @ ValkyrieQ8 “No enemy is untouchable, no matter how powerful they appear”. The theme from red to shadows encompasses the life of Basim. He goes from street thief to an apprentice within the Brotherhood. His skill and determination eventually result in him wearing the famous red sash. However, it is this moment in his life that the darkness and shadows betray him, and he is lost to Loki. I think his attire in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla depicts this theme with the mix of red and black. This capture gives such a dream vibe with Basim caught between two paths. I like how his eyes are hidden behind the beak of the hood, with the whites trying to break out. The reds and blacks mix almost signifying the confusion in Basim's mind as he fights to find out who he really is. And that sums it up for this Assassin’s Creed virtual photography recap list! Thank you for checking out the photo collection. This would not be possible without the virtual photographers out there so a huge thanks to them. This Week in Assassin’s Creed Virtual Photography: 22nd to 28th May Community Share 30 May 2023 Written By: Edited By: Aaron Young Colum Blackett Back To Database Welcome to the weekly virtual photography roundup hosted by Aaron Young from The AC Partnership Program. This week’s theme: Assassin’s Creed Paradise Game: Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag VP Artist: @ TheLordReylus This letter box capture is such a perfect way to kick start this week’s showcase. For a 9 year old game this shot looks great, a testament to the quality of Assassin’s Creed games. On first glance I was sure that this was from Odyssey it looked that good. The colours here are so relaxing and the shot is very peaceful. I adore the sun bouncing off the sea, and the seagulls in the distance. The gem of the shot has to be the ship's sail just poking up on the horizon. The Ancient World Game: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey VP Artist: @ Birgamerinalbu1 We are now off to Odyssey for some truly mesmerising shots of the Greek landscapes. Check the link below for the full set, I picked this particular shot due to the incredibly colourful scenery. That water flowing against the shore is stunning. I also like the palm trees and the beautiful statue in the distance. The mountains and the beach are so picturesque and the whole ambience of this shot is so captivating. Link to set: The Ones Who Came Before Photo of the Week: The Ancient World - Picked by Oliver (Aged 5) ''I like this photo because it is very peacful and calm. I really like the palm tree and the beautiful colours. I would really like to be on this beach having fun.'' Mirage Game: Assassin’s Creed Origins VP Artist: @ missroseplays In the week where we finally saw some gameplay from the much anticipated Assassin’s Creed Mirage, I thought it fitting to feature a shot that looks like it could be straight from Baghdad. This beautifully minimalistic photo captures the essence of a weary traveller crossing the desert in search of his next target. I admire how the shadow line splits the shot with the delightful image of Bayek on his horse just off-centre. A truly wonderful piece of virtual photography. Norse Warrior Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ reddeadgem This is an awesome portrait of Eivor as he stares into the distance. The depth of field is faultless, allowing Eivor to stand out amongst the scenery. Attention to detail is on point. The hair looks almost real and the tattoos impeccable. This capture would have fit nicely with our tattoo themed week. I really believe Ubisoft did a fantastic job with both character models for Eivor, and they are one of my favourite protagonists to capture for sure. Duo Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla VP Artist: @ NIKOOO-WOLF The final shot of the week is spectacular. I cannot believe how good this capture looks. The level of detail on both Sýnin and Eivor is immaculate. The fog-like hue that surrounds them adds so much mystery. Such a well-timed shot with both characters looking in the same direction, I wonder what it is they have seen. A perfect pick for #Thorsday with Synin representing Odin’s eye, even if he is a Falcon here. And that sums it up for this week’s Assassin’s Creed virtual photography recap list! Thank you for checking out this week’s photo collection. This would not be possible without the virtual photographers out there so a huge thanks to them. • A Tightrope of Rebellion - A Review of Assassin’s Creed: The Magus Conspiracy | TheOnesWhoCameBefore

A Tightrope of Rebellion - A Review of Assassin’s Creed: The Magus Conspiracy Reviews Share 26 Jun 2022 Written By: Edited By: Michael Smith Ashlea Blackett Back To Database The war between Assassins and Templars wreaks havoc in the Victorian era, in this breakneck thriller which opens up a whole new chapter of the Assassin’s Creed universe. London, 1851 – When Pierrette, a daring acrobat performing at the Great Exhibition, rescues the mathematician Ada Lovelace from a gang of thugs, she becomes immersed in an ancient feud between Assassins and Templars. But Lovelace is gravely ill, and shares her secrets with Pierrette, sending the acrobat in search of a terrible weapon which she’d been developing for a shadowy figure known as “the Magus”. Pierrette’s only ally is Simeon Price, Lovelace’s childhood friend, who belongs to a Brotherhood devoted to free will. With Simeon’s aid, they uncover a startling web of political assassinations destabilizing Europe. As they race to foil the Templars’ deadly plot, murders and bombs are everywhere they look, but hope is nowhere in sight. *Review copy provided by Aconyte Books | Minor character/story spoiler warning My Assassin’s Creed journey started in January of 2021, when I began working through the vast universe of Assassin’s Creed in order of the Genetic Memory, or historical period explored within the Animus. At the time of this article, I am about to start the latest DLC with Dawn of Ragnarök, and recently have finished reading the previous novel released by Aconyte Books; Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Sword of The White Horse. So for the last few months, I split my time between 9th Century England and the Italian Renaissance as my Genetic Memory playthrough could not wait until the next piece of media was released. Luckily I did not have to wait long, as I was provided with a review copy for Assassin’s Creed: The Magus Conspiracy. A new original from Aurora Award-winning author, Kate Heartfield and the Assassin’s Creed Stories transmedia line. Written as a political thriller during the time of the Great Exhibition in 1850s England, this story had me intrigued immediately from the synapsis on the book’s website and back cover. Ada Lovelace, mathematician and a woman considered to be the first computer programmer, developed a weapon called “The Engine of History” with a ''shadowy figure'', The Magus. Two main characters, an acrobat named Pierrette and a soldier named Simeon Price work together to find this device during a time of political assassinations and rebellion. The cover is one of the greatest artworks that I have seen yet for an AC novel, designed by freelance illustrator Bastien Jez. Being an original story, the artwork is not just a piece of key art from a video game, but an intricate design with characters from the book. However, while the Magus at the top, Pierrette in the middle, and Ada Lovelace on the left are all recognizable, I did have trouble identifying the two men on the right. While this did not hinder my enjoyment of the book, it did leave me with that question unanswered. The colours though feel very fitting to the era of the story in the pre-Victorian period, showing class and wealth that reflect the lifestyle of a lot of the characters within such as Lovelace. The history through this book covers so much over a decade of storytelling, with each event intertwined with the Assassin’s Creed series. The book opens on the HMS Birkenhead, a naval ship that crashed off the coast of Africa in 1845. It is here that we are introduced to Simeon Price, a Lance-Corporal in the 74th Highland Regiment of the British Army. After the ship is damaged when it hits an uncharted rock formation, Simeon attempts to help his fellow countrymen that are trapped below deck in rapidly flooding water. It's at this time that a mysterious figure drops down upon a Lieutenant on deck and runs to join him in rescuing the soldiers. The man invites Simeon to visit his Brotherhood in Vienna if he chooses to leave the army. Yet, history has a different plan for him that day and Simeon, along with the rest of his regiment are ordered to go down with the ship instead of abandoning as ordered by the captain. This chapter alone is a perfect example of the action, history, and the mystery of the Assassin’s Creed model. By introducing this original character to the underlying story of the AC universe, readers are provided a fresh introduction to a secret war of factions that have been told over the last fifteen years. The second character is introduced in the following chapter. Pierrette is a French acrobat in a travelling circus troupe who is known for their equestrian performances. When the original male performer that closes their show with a riding depiction of the poem “Mazeppa” by Lord Byron breaks his collarbone, Pierrette convinces the leader of the circus to allow her the chance to close out the show near the Great Exhibition. While performing this dangerous feat which involves riding a horse up a ramp that is built above the crowd, the young acrobat sees a woman being taken against her will from the tent. With her acrobatic skills, Pierrette lifts the woman into the air and out of the clutches of a gang of men, helping her escape to the park outside. This woman is the intelligent socialite and mathematician, Ada Lovelace, a woman that introduces her saviour to a life of art, wealth, and intrigue. Whilst her historical illness begins taking its toll, Ada opens up to the acrobat about her plans for a machine that could be devastating to the world if it was ever built. Ada’s request of her newest and most interesting friend is to locate a man that she grew up with years ago to help destroy her horrific creation before it ended up in the wrong hands; a man named Simeon Price. The remainder of the book is divided between the two protagonists, with Simeon searching for a Brotherhood that he hopes to learn more from and understand conscience and choice over order and servitude. A brotherhood that teaches him how to hide in plain sight, and see the world in a different light that will better his ability to identify the innocent from the unjust. His journey will introduce him to an Assassin named Oscar Kane, who takes him in as an apprentice and teaches him the ways of the Assassin, and the ways of the modern man. The detail of how the new Assassin hopeful is trained was one of the best sections of this novel, as lists of real world books, that are provided for the character to study, giving us, the reader a great idea of what an Assassin would learn outside the swordplay and combo chains from a controller and game tutorial. His training introduces him to the Templar order, as well as historical men of the various European rebellions as the book’s antagonist, The Magus, starts to show their hand in orchestrating multiple assassination attempts on the highest figures in the country using the working man as his weapon of choice. Pierrette’s adventure is built around her traveling family and her yearning to become something more, to become famous. Her time with Ada Lovelace allowed entry into the world of fashion and the ability to befriend artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his wife, the model Lizzie Siddal. Her time traveling through Europe will lead her further into the intertwining story of the Assassins vs Templars and the unknown Magus that both she and Simeon are searching for. Pairing the two together against futuristic weapons and the ghosts of their pasts. All aspects of the Assassin’s Creed lore are present; The history of the Assassin v Templar war, the Precursors (Isu) and the artefacts that they created which provide unimaginable power, scenes of combat and synchronization points when characters climb famous landmarks across Europe, mentions of Eagle Vision, character cameos from another AC property, and one of the best Easter eggs I have seen yet in a novel, referencing the name of Master Assassin, Ezio Auditore. Yet, you do not need to know anything about the rest of the AC universe to enjoy this title, as it holds its own with no issues of not understanding the overall lore of the series. The Magus Conspiracy is the first of a new trilogy of Novels under the series, “The Engine of History”. The books will cover the second half of the 19th century, up until World War I. With a good section of the Magus Conspiracy taking place in Austria, I could easily see the story continuing through the Age of Rebellion and the Industrial Revolution until closing the trilogy with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the death that started the first World War. This could also intertwine Jacob and Evie Frye from the Syndicate games Historical figures such as Rasputin and Vladimir Lenin. We could even see the return of Assassin Nikolai Orelov, if the Engine of History moves further east into Russia. This book made me excited for the future of the franchise and introduced me to a fantastic writer, Kate Heartfield. The research that Kate put into this story is very thorough as I was able to find information on all of the historical figures and events that took place and read an accurate retelling that made this story stand out from previous releases. Each political assassination attempt that fueled the plot, was enhanced by the original characters attempting to discover the identity of the antagonist. I found this to be the strongest historical fiction book thus far, as the number of Assassin’s Creed Originals at the time was limited to the book Assassin's Creed: Heresy by Christie Golden, a title that I enjoy as well. While all of the AC Story Classics that Ubisoft had released are good novelizations of the games they represent, the transmedia thrives with the unique Chronicles and Original labels as they have more freedom to create a new story in the expanding universe. Assassin’s Creed: The Magus Conspiracy releases globally as a digital release and in the US in Paperback on August 2, 2022 & paperback in the UK on October 27, 2022. Assassin's Creed: The Magus Conspiracy is available to purchase on Amazon. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.
